Yeah...the guys suggested that Rick was too hands off with them, when at the time given the politics they needed someone pushing the band in the right direction and getting them together:
Scott: "If you're gonna work with a producer, unless you're gonna produce something yourselves, if you're gonna pay a producer, get in the trenches with us and work with us...The Rick thing didn't work out, and, you know, he was working on a couple of other things, METALLICA and U2, and so we kind of became very uninspired."
Dave: "It was originally Rick who I was excited about because I had known for years but never worked with him," Kushner said. "I think it had a lot to do with what the band needed at the time. I think we didn't realize that we needed — because we kind of had been meandering for a year writing songs — I think we needed someone to corral us and say, 'OK, guys come on let's go. Let's do this,' and that's not really Rick's style of working"
I think they ended up going with Brendan O'Brien who was STP's producer right?
I'd guess a lot of VR's problems and the weakness in that album came down to the chemistry in the band breaking down after the contraband tour. Seems writing libertad was difficult and the subsequent tour went to hell. I guess they needed a producer to help them work through their issues.

Rick is a big Axl fan, actually went to a few shows. I had a friend at Virgin a long time ago who said Rick was interested in an Axl gig but I don't think he would have been a good match for Axl and what he needed. It's really a shame Youth didn't stick around (you can't blame him) because he was a big believer in Axl.
To hold a hugely petty grudge over a magazine article saying Axl said no to him, then I guess it's best he wasn't involved. There's enough children in the GN'R camp right now. And I like Caram's work, seems like the best guy for Axl.

Oh yeah I love and appreciate Caram's work and production on the album and know there will be more when that eventual album is recorded and finished. As for Rick Rubin, I could see him maybe do a heavier rock song that Axl is hiding in the vaults; but most of the songs on CD I couldn't see him get behind. Originally it was said that there were rumors that Eddie Van Halen wanted Rick to produce ADKOT which wouldn't be a good idea at all. Van Halen has a sound that wouldn't sound right with that kind of production. Glad that didn't happen.

Yeah, VH and Rick wouldn't mesh. GN'R in 1987, yes. Definitely.
Yeah I could see that as a possibility. Mother Goose Pitman sort of serves a producer role in most cases with CD and it's many sessions. Since he does alot of work with the tracks, songwriting, and some editing with Pro tools with Caram.

I understand people losing faith in something happening..but I'm curious...why 2009?
Chinese Democracy came out in 2008, at least 8 years after most of the songs were written, 2 years after what seemed to be a revised timeline for a launch strategy circa 2006, and also after many of it's songs had already long since leaked to the public.
While Axl joked of "Same Bat Time", and while a decade earlier his original plan seemed to be to drop an album every 2 years with an huge tour for 3 cycles in a row....to me the saga of CD showed that it's easy for his timelines to go to hell, but at the same time, the things do eventually usually happen.
At one stage it seemed like the band would never release CD, then it seemed like a north american tour was never happening and so on...it seems things do keep on rolling in GNR land just on a scale and a schedule well slower than anyone would like.
So I think CD2 will eventually happen, but I also think it just might take around the time CD1 did, we've already clocked 5 years, I can see a new album happening but still taking another 2-4 years for the details to be sorted - business and creative. While I well understand as fans we may be like "fuck that" - I don't really see anything to suggest it won't ever happen - as everything seems the same to me - Axl doing things his way and at his own pace.
The only thing I could see derailing it is illhealth - at some stage if he got sick he might just call it a career...but as long as he's well enough to record and peform...I think something will eventually happen - we'll all just be old and pissed off by the time it does
