Actually makes me feel optimistic that he could regain 2006 era form then.

I'd be most happy with return to 2006 era vocal chops - but not sure if that's possible. Some say it's just training and exercising the voice, but others seem to think he has an unfixable vocal issue and what we see now is him managing it as best as can be.
In 2006 the big difference was that he had Baz's vocal coach. I'm assuming that isn't the case now.
2002: squeaky voice, no vocal coach.
2006: raspy voice, vocal coach.
2010-present: squeaky voice, thus we must infer that there's no vocal coach.

I maintain hope that it's fixable - either he's protecting himself or being lazy or out of shape (see lazy). But even 2002 squeaky Axl had much more power than he's demonstrating these days. Plus, he's still got that sweet spot where the rasp and power come through, so it can't be hurting him that much. (LALD scream, for example.)
