Yea the one from a few years ago

The only documentary you need to watch of Metallica's is the "Year & A Half In The Life Of" Part 1 & 2. They focus on the recording of the Black album, and the world tour that followed after.
It's a really great, funny and entertaining insight to life in the studio and on the road in the biggest rock band at the time, and it's really good.
I imagine GN'R's long lost UYI doco would be much of the same.

As for the Some Kind Of Monster doco, it's a bunch of cry baby millionaires all on the verge of self-destruction because they can't work together anymore.
They come good at the end, but it's definitely not Metallica pictured in the best light.

QFT. They look and sound like a bunch of pussies, and the band's pretty much sucked since before that anyways unfortunately. Death Magnetic was decent.

Getting old sucks I guess.

Hey man, no offense taken, I completely agree with you dude. Metallica DO come off as a bunch of pussies in that doco!

"Ooh, I'm a millionaire rock star and I can't get my shit together" 14 14 14

The Year & A Half doco though, that is a band enjoying the rock star lifestyle to the limit, and still being quite humble about it all.

To paint an alternative perspective...I actually really enjoyed Some Kind of Monster.

For me was interesting to see:

1. Guys in metallica are actually human beings. Prior image going back to binge and purge era is that they're "men's men" and tougher than fuck - so was sort of interesting to see them in real life settings, like hanging out trying to write a riff or with their kids and shit rather than just drinking each other's piss and banging their chests on stage.

2. While I'll grant it gets pretty emo, I also found it interesting that even such successful people have self doubts. Maybe it's because I get self doubt. So while it's a bunch of crying. Some of it I found fascinating - like James "Oh..I write a riff and all of a sudden it's 'lets have kirk play that riff", Lars "sorry but it sounds fucking stock", and the way they whole band just goes "hey fuck you kirk it's not cool to play guitar solos anymore...enjoy standing there doing nothing". The way lars is in a mult-million dollar band but does it cos he needs his dad's approval. The way they sort of all love and hate each other at once, and of course Dave Mustane! wink But it's interesting that you can be one of the biggest acts of all time and still be like "do I suck now?"

3. The pressures of recording albums. The film shows the making of St Anger which is one of their worst albums in my books - almost unlistenable - but when you see how it was made the mess that is that album starts to make more sense.

4. It's basically an origin story for Robert the new bass player...and to sort of get modern metallica I think it helps to see this flick. It's actually interesting even if you're not a previous fan - hell maybe more so - I showed it to a few of my female friends who don't like metal much and one of them ended up picking up Death Magentic and is kinda a causal fan now - cos you get to see the personality of everyone in the band and it sort of makes you feel like you know them.

5. If you've ever played in bands and stuff you'll appriciate the drama and infighting.

Personally while I'll grant it transformed them from tough-guys to cry-babies in the public mindset - and while it's way hard to feel sorry for these millionaires ultra first world problems!..I think it's a great movie. I'd recommend it to you neemo.

From a PR standpoint I have no idea why they released that. Enjoyed it though, for very much the same reasons as you monkey. Not often you see bands put themselves on the spot like that. But again, it really makes them look so bad I still have no idea why they did it. After watching it Hetfield has basically gone from badass rocker to insecure drunk, Lars too is insecure and a bit of antagonistic asshole. Doesn't seem particularly intelligent either. Hammet is revealed as the feminine doormat. I'm actually quite shocked they saw that on tape and thought, sure let's release this, it will be good for our image!

When I watched this trailer, this film has prepared me for needing tons of opiates and a case of Whiskey.

What in the fuck is that?
