My guess is they are trying to generate people's interest in new studio work from them to manipulate the record company into playing ball.

They've been able to work with the label on getting the Vegas DVD set for release, assuming that doesn't fall apart. That would tell me there's some hope. Maybe a corresponding album to go with the DVD or soon after? I agree it's wishful thinking and probably a long shot but it is possible.

This looks hopeful. Like that this an pic posted on one of their social media sites. Just want to know what's going to happen next. Hopefully it is a pic of them recording something GNR related. Would of been even better getting a glimpse of fortus or  bumblefoot thrown into the pic to make this feel even more uplifting. This could be something a little extra for the Vegas DVD or new album material. At least it's something I suppose.

Pretty cool.  I'm hoping that the GN'R re-tweet and the GN'R reference in DJ's tweet mean something.  We'll see in time, I suppose.

That pretty much sums it up.  Obviously things didn't go smoothly between the band and the label during the CD saga.  Axl has spoken in interviews and onstage during concerts about his problems with the label and other business dealings.  People have long speculated that the label could care less about the latest version of GNR and are only interested in a reunion, thus no help as far as new music goes.  Speculation in part, but obviously there are plenty of facts that point to the relationship not being good.

But the fact that the label seems to be in support of the Vegas DVD release, at least as far as it seems and as far as we've heard, that would seem to signal some positivity on that front.  Does it extend past that?  We can only wait and see.

Might've been a change in personnel at the label - some new blood who's more receptive to the idea of just cashing in and making some money out of the current GN'R rather than pushing for a reunion. Could be any number of factors.

The speculative theories usually advanced go something like this:

Theory 1:

The label has GNR under contract for 1 more record only, if that record were to be an original line up record then their payday would be significantly higher than for a modern line up record, particularly since it's the sophomore release from modern GNR and thus not subject to as much general interest. They therefore are actively working to undermine the modern band, and will basically block any record without Slash.

The comparison drawn is how motley crue's label engineered the return of vince neil.

I usually argue against this theory as in my opinion while i'm sure they'd love a reunion, most record companies are short term creatures worried about the current budget, they've already paid for 90% of CD2, and recouped from the best buy deal, so at some point the short term sales that GNR is guaranteed to pull internationally with ANY release must seem like tempting gravy over a reunion that seems impossible when they can't even agree for stuff like RRHOF. Also, if the reunion card was really the hold up, why not just cut a new deal with the label where if they play ball now they get one more option - in the event of a reunion they get first dibs. If Axl never planned to reunite anyway - it would be no skin off his nose to give them options he would never fullfil anyway - and it might get his record out.

Theory 2:

Less conspiracy like. Something along the lines of - for whatever reason most of GNR's dealings seem historically turbulent. Both within the band, with managers, and with pretty much all sides of the business. People speculate that Axl is very emotional and prone to times of rage/loving things. This would mean that he's hard to deal with from a label perspective as he's easy to offend, and you're never sure how long he'll continue to agree with what you decide even if you think you made an agreement. Meanwhile his personal managers, now the actual management, Beta/Fernando etc - are said by many fans to have a tendency towards being rude or brash with people, and we've also seen that even band members/friends have a hard time talking to Axl directly without getting through the "wall of handlers".

So under this theory. Axl and the label came to a disagreement about a legitimate business term. For example something like the budget the label should spend promoting the next album, or if there should be an advance to finish off CD2 sessions, or if GNR should cut the label into it's touring revenue in exchange for label assistance etc. Unfortunately what was a business disagreement gets personal because either Axl gets upset, management is rude to label execs who are a little power happy themselves, or there's just some kind of wild miscommunication going on. This leads to a stale mate where the label can't be bothered dealing with GNR - because they arn't the cash cow they once were anyway, and the label is pretty busy working it's roster to keep afloat in the piracy age, and they just can't get through the wall of silence and have no real reason to beg to. GNR meanwhile is hurt that the label seems to have abandoned them and so dedicate the next few years to touring - as it pays the bills without the label's input - and also a significant successful touring record would help wipe the past reputation and establishing a market/demand for GNR publicly would give the label some reason to want to re-open negotiations.

I am not saying either of these theories is correct, but they are the two stories I commonly see fans speculating upon.
