Re: Times when you miss VR
I dunno - in a way it's silly for me to contrast them anyway as I'm comparing two things I like.
I actually feel the reverse of what you said though, for my taste, I've always felt STP was an over-rated band. I don't mean they don't have good songs, they sure do, in fact I really like some of them, but something about the product to me was not A-list or something. To me STP is the sort of mid-card band that's not the first act of the night, but they're still opening the show for a band like GNR. That's how I see them in my mind - they're not headline worthy - just a great middle act. Still - obviously that's more about my taste than the public perception as I know in reality they do headline a lot.
I do like the STP songs - but for example - to me VR played some of STP's song's better than STP did....they are a great band...I just don't think they're on that top tier.
Same with Alterbridge for that matter - AB has some songs I enjoy - but they're not on my A-list either.
So for me it's kinda a mix.
I think scott has the stronger stage presence, and comparing STP to AB I probably like STP more, but then in terms of general vocal performance I prefer Myles to Scott - at least in terms of who I'd like to see play with Slash - his vocal range is more suited to classic rock and Slash's tone - and I think musically he has a wider palate than Scott.
To me scott only does one thing, it's one thing that he does very damn well though...but I feel like he's done it now....going forward I can see more good music coming out of Slash/Myles than I could Scott/Myles.
But Scott actually puts some emotion into his voice, and some effort into his songwriting. He may not be able to reach the high notes that Myles does, but I'd rather hear Slither or Trippin' On A Hole In A Paper Heart or It's So Easy sung with some venom than a note-perfect karaoke version of SCOM. Or fucking "Starlight is bright tonight," or whatever banal rhyme Myles has shat out this week.

Listen to Alter Bridge's song Blackbird, and tell me again how Myles has no emotion in his singing.

Moments like this put the Myles has not soul to rest. The guy CAN fucking sing with the best of them when he wants to "sing" and not go nasal or too high.

He should sing in that more natural voice instead of the nasal bullshit. It's not even like he avoids the nasal voice on non-GN'R stuff. Anastasia is a good example of a song where he came up with a very nice melody, but undermined it with nasal vocals. Sing in your natural voice dude.

I want myles to sing like this again...
haha, Rock Star. Good movie. Myles looks so young compared to now and it doesn't seem like 12 years is that long ago. That movie is a good example of the need for solid movies about the rock business.
They need to make a GN'R movie. They flamed out quick, but they had one of the most interesting runs of any band in history. From the streets of L.A. to the biggest stadium tour ever in a span of 5 years. During that time you had people dying at one of their shows, shitload of controversy about One In A Million, Izzy peeing on the plane, multiple riots on the UYI tour, Axl getting arrested in St. Louis, and Appetite/UYI selling a gazillion copies.
And that was just the shit happening in public. Behind the scenes you had Slash almost dying of an OD, Duff's pancreas exploding and almost killing him, Axl demanding that the others give him the band name, Izzy sobering up and quitting the band, Adler getting fired for too much drug use (the biggest hypocrisy ever in a band like GN'R, haha), and on and on.
