VR is an enigma to me:

On one hand the chemistry between Duff/Matt/Slash is tangible, you see them live and you can feel it in the air, the sum of the whole is more than the parts, and as a band they have that force behind them. It's interesting because in the 1990s I'd always assumed the dangerous vibe of GNR came from Axl, and while Axl has a shit ton of that for sure, his rock star unpredictability and so on, I realised seeing VR that there's also a lot of charisma in Duff/Matt/Slash too.

On the other hand, while VR's got some great songs, they also always seemed to be slightly under-achiving on what they're obviously capable of doing. As duff said "I think we've yet to make our best album" - and that's the feeling I always got too. Slash's solos were great but he was kind of neutered compared to him in GNR and solo works. It's curious - you see the band come alive on covers - brownstone, sex type thing...it's like they have the shear horsepower to do something fucking epic - but  they couldn't agree with scott enough to do it.

So it leaves me with a catch 22. When I see the modern bands - I miss that energy of VR - I see slash and I wish Duff and Matt were in his band still. Hence my current geeking for Kings of Chaos. But at the same time - musically - I prefer the Slash solo stuff - songs like "By the Sword" and "Anastasia" and so on to me showcase a superior side to slash that was restrained in VR.

My personal belief is that they should have made Slash's solo album as a VR record - with all guest singers - this would be a way to cleanse the palate and adjust the public consciousness to VR without scott - and it would sort of work too as it would still be a supergroup with all those famous frontmen on that album. Then they could have appointed myles as the new lead singer and continued on together under the VR moniker....but I'm just dreaming.

Problem being, I don't think Myles was wanted as a frontman for VR.  At least outside of Slash.  Who knows if that has changed over time.  Maybe others have warmed to the idea seeing what he and Slash have done together.  And I think Slash needed some time away from VR anyway.  He seems to be enjoying himself now more than ever.  Well, at least in a long time.  Probably why he's in no rush to return.  Not that it couldn't work again, but why mess with a good thing (in his eyes)?

A recent interview with Matt, he made it very clear that he doesn't really have the energy to be in a band situation again, so I think VR is done.

I'm glad that Slash still has intentions of writing and releasing new music, and still touring. I've seen Slash & the Conspirators live twice in only a matter of a few years, and no doubt they will tour again.

I really do miss that Matt, Duff, Slash combo though. Those guys just sound so right together.

Naw, they just need to give Steve a ring.

That is like saying Finck is better than Ashba. In each instance, they both suck and it's a matter of one sucking less than the other. Slash needs to get rid of the nasal voice, but also don't bring back the bullshit STP sound either. I'd love it if he could get Ian Astbury for instance.

Chris Robinson from the Black Crowes would have been good.

Scott has more stage presence than Myles, but for me anyway, he's very two-dimensional creatively.

That said I like scott's songs, it's just they always have a lot of repeats and his vocal range is limited.

I was glad to have him do some music with slash, but going forward, I'd rather have another "Anastasia" than a "She Build's Quick Machines".
