Re: 10 Horror Remakes Done Right
I thought Final Destination 5 was one of the more recent sequel/reboot films I saw that BRILLIANTLY rebooted a franchise, while being a sequel, while being an original story with twists n' turns that kept you guessing.
I wish more horror films could be like that. FD5 also slowed it's pace down, and set up suspense, unlike most films these days that continue WORTHLESS fast cuts, to try to make everything a rock video for the ADHD-gen of stupidity. It's NOT WHAT HORROR IS.
Too many films up there do that, and for that -- they suck.
Night of the Living Dead 1990 deserves FAR more credit and should be up there before Dawn 2004.
For anyone that has any love for the Saw franchise, you have to admit that franchise has did FAR MORE DAMAGE to the horror genre than it benefitted.
I still think it boils down to quality scripts, direction, MUSIC, and cast. Rarely are these things put together. It wouldn't hurt to come up with good scripts that also tap cult actors in supporting roles in order to give experience and be the glue that holds it together.
I'm not necessarily talking about guys like Kurt Russell in Death Proof, but maybe a bit cheaper and lesser known. This is something that seems a bit missing from quality films. Even though he did NOTHING, it felt good to see Tony Todd in FD5. Malcolm McDowell seems a go-to as well, but honestly... I don't think he's fitted to it. I think of guys like Steven Seagal, Robert Englund, Michael Biehn, Christopher Lambert, Danny Glover... to name a few. All are great options to bring credibility to a good script. But it STARTS there.
