been on a bit of a floyd kick lately and In the Flesh struck me as having pretty racist commmentary... similar to OIAM and i wondered if axl drew inspiration from it, and what anyone else on the board might think about it

Are there any queers in the theater tonight?
Get them up against the wall!
There's one in the spotlight, he don't look right to me,
Get him up against the wall!
That one looks Jewish!
And that one's a coon!
Who let all of this riff-raff into the room?
There's one smoking a joint,
And another with spots!
If I had my way,
I'd have all of you shot!

GnR always gets flack for OIAM but the lyrics for this are pretty brutal as well

I assume the reason for that is the fact that In The Flesh is from the scene in The Wall where the main character envisions himself as a facist dictator. In the film adaptation of the album, he is portrayed as a Nazi. However, in One in a Million, there is no indication that Axl is singing as a character, so people would assume that the lyrics are his actual point of view.

The Wall was a concept album and it had paranoid and discriminatory themes popping up all through it, in the context of the album that verse wasnt shocking at all, it was all part of the theatre.

OIAM came out of left field and had no context, it was like it was just another Axl Rose rant from that scary band Guns N Roses and it rather than being theatre, it was genuine venom. I like the melody and passion of the song but I still find the line of immigrants and faggots spreading diseases uncomfortable.

just to clarify i think it's the faggots who spread the disease, the immigrants talk so many goddamn ways & think they'll do as they please.

OIAM lyrics are awesome. much much better than Roger Walters imo.

Yeah i know i'm too drunk to place them apart, they're in the same verse and as a whole its just naive venom imo. I like the song but I find it embarrassing, Axls vocals and the music are fantastic but the lyrics are weak. I cant crank that song out and sing along and feel proud, it just doesnt sit right with me. I think thats what Axl was going for, to be controversial rather than have a real point. He was trying to get under peoples skin to create a furore, its like someone saying something really offensive then turning round and saying "I was only joking", its a cop out, Axl said it wasnt him it was a character he was describing - cop out.

I enjoy singing along to it.
It's s snapshot of emotion. Unapologetic. I can see why some might not like his choice of words but it works, fit well. I've had plenty of fucking horrible thoughts about people & said horrible things about people in the heat of the moment & I think he captures that. It's just a passing feeling y'know not a cop out. I think he excuses himself in the chorus the narrator finds redemption.

I think Ax meant it as stated....straight up hardcore honesty. Wall definitely Waters theatre as he is a FLAMING liberal. OIAM is easily a top 10 Gnr song. I don't agree with everything Axl said but it is him to the bone....you boys don't live in the South. I understand his point of view but do think he could have said things a bit more PC. In the end, songs like that are why we love him.....he is a fractured, narcissistic, angry, intelligent, soft hearted, romantic, witty, mean bastard. He is what he is.

I can't imagine he is, or was, homophobic. He's named Freddy Mercury and Elton John as influences, how could he be homophobic and still idolize them?
