NIN is and was Trent, even the instruments. The other guys are touring musicians.

Not in comparison to GN'R. Axl may have final say over what does and doesn't get worked ona nd released, but the songs are writtten largely by peple who aren't him. And are recorded by those players.
Trent's ownership of NIN is more honest and complete than Axl's of GN'R is.

This raises an interesting point to me.
Its only in rock music that to be considered proficient and talented one has to be the composer and performer of the work. If he were a violinist and was up there shreding mozart and bethoven no one would expect him to compose his own work 
That said..if you altered the phrases from mozart as drasticly as he alters Slash's prhases you'd be kicked out of the classical scene
