BUMBLEFOOT Says Waiting For A New GUNS N' ROSES Album To Get Done Is 'Just Too Much' - Feb. 7, 2013
Steve Mascord of Hot Metal recently conducted an interview with GUNS N' ROSES guitarist Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

On GUNS N' ROSES' plans for the follow-up for 2008's "Chinese Democracy":

Thal: "There's been talk all the time within us about the next album and what we're going to do and when we're going to do it. But, you know, life always gets in the way. Things get in the way. It's hard to have the momentum and the focus and everything that you need. It's hard to put everything aside and do a whole album.

"Personally, I don't want to do an album. I would like to just do a song. Let's just bite off a song and get a song out there and then bite off another song and get that out there. It's easier to do.

"Look, waiting for an album to get done is just too much. I can't do it myself. If I waited to finish an album, it still wouldn't be done and the album still wouldn't be out.

"When there's so much touring and so much other stuff going on, don't try and take on 14 songs. Do a song, then another song, then another song and then figure it out from there."

On singer Axl Rose's decision to skip GUNS N' ROSES' April 2012 induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame:

Thal: "Honestly, we tried to work it out with the Hall Of Fame to come up with something but they had it in their mind that it was their way or no way. So they wouldn't budge and they were just trying to force a situation that wasn't good for everybody. We wanted it to be good for everybody. So…

"A lot of people should be in there that aren't. DEEP PURPLE isn't in there. That's a fucking travesty…"

On allegations that when GUNS N' ROSES played Townsville on December 1, 2010 that Rose had been "caught" lip-syncing, with local television sneaking into the venue and filming the performance:

Thal: "I assure you, everything Axl sings is real, everything I play is real, everything I sing is real. Trust me, we fuck up enough that you know it's real."

On GUNS N' ROSES' concert tardiness:

Thal: "You know what? When you're waiting, I'm waiting too. I don't want to wait fucking three hours to get on stage. I want to give you guys a show and I want you to be happy. But, hey, it's out of my control."

On reports in India that GUNS N' ROSES bassist Tommy Stinson had lost his temper on stage during an encore performance of ROSE TATTOO's "Nice Boys (Don't Play Rock'n'Roll)" in Gurgaon in December 12:

Thal: "It wasn't that. What happened was, we did our bow and we were walking off stage and we said, 'Let's do some more.' They were already packing up the gear and shutting everything down. So they first had to fire up everything all over again and half the shit was away so we started playing with half our gear and finally it was just like, 'You know what? Fuck it.' Some shit wouldn't go on, we're re-connecting cables, so the crew was going crazy trying to get it all done and it was just another moment in the history of the band."

Fair play Ron, say it how it is. Why not release a track at a time? I'd take that!

I think the lack of recording might come down to the fact that Axl just doesn't like what some of these new guys bring to the table. Coming in to tour is a lot different than creating new music. If he did, they would be recording, imo. Unless he just can't afford to make another album without financial help from the label. Anyway, they havean album ready. Release that one.

Yeah I can see that.  I feel sorry for Ron and those guys to a certain extent, they are always gonna get asked about it, and have nothing they can really say. I do like how Ron says what he thinks though, even if it'll never happen.

Debate has gone round and round on who holds the cards, what is in the vault, how the record company are holding onto reunion chances, how Axl is blocking, how he may not like what the 'touring' dudes bring etc.  It's all pretty shit whichever way you look at it.

But once again, props for Ron for saying what he thinks. I wish Axl could be as direct, in any form.

I never knew about the lip-sync claim though.

I agree with BBF that they should be doing a song at a time thing at this point.

I maintain that all GN'R needs to do is release one bad ass track through any means. Throw it on their website, fb page, twitter, release it to radio on their own... whatever.

Worst case scenario, it creates some sort of buzz and the label gets mad that they didn't release it. Ball is then in GN'Rs court to negotiate a release of that song, an EP or whatever. If nothing comes of it popularity-wise, than the label wouldn't have anything to worry about but GN'R fans still get new music.

Agreed. bumblefoot and the boys deserve to get their dues in terms of releasing a great rocker. He's just as frustrated as we are that shit isn't getting taken care of and there is no forward momentum for the band. I know Axl still has it in him to write something brilliant. A song every few months would be a miracle now instead of having the company still block a full album that could be hit or miss or just left overs from the vaults that may have potential for the hardcores to eat up. Even an EP is more difficult now which is quite sad.

That would be great, but I wonder how willing the label would be to go down that route.  It's one thing to release a single in advance of an album release to promote it.  It's yet another to abandon the album format altogether.

Is there really any major label that has abandoned the album format with its roster of artists?

I can't think of any off the top of my head.

The Smashing Pumpkins / Teargarden by Kaleydoscope approach could work for Guns, actually. They have enough tracks in the vault to keep a reasonable production / release schedule with the physical product coming to the picture somewhat as an afterthought (think compilations).

Of course, no major label has gone this way. Which serves as another example of how ridiculously inept they are in dealing with the digital revolution. Name me one major artist who wholeheartedly loves his/her label.

Can't think of any, myself.

I appreciate BBFs honesty.

I find this is all pretty pathetic though.

Touring getting in the way? Take a break from it.

Too many other distractions or projects? Learn to prioritise. Cancel all other musical, clothing and culinary projects for a year.

I wander if this band has ever sat down together as a group and just jammed. Not rehearsed gnr songs, but just jammed, thrown around some ideas and had some fun creating music together.
I think the closest we've seen was 'one man mutiny'
