I'd say Motley Crue even got it right the first time with Decade Of Decadence without even taking it to double disc. That had enough hits for the people that wanted the hits, and enough rare/unreleased stuff for the people who wanted more after the success of Feelgood.
I was with you on most of that until you got to the end with Johnny Cash. I get what you're saying for most of his career, but all of those American Recordings albums can stand on their own start to finish. Completely worth having the full albums.

Oh I completely agree.
But come on dude, if you're heading out the door, and you're gonna be on the road for an hour and you want some Cash, are you really gonna grab albums or are you gonna grab a hits set?
We all make our own mix tapes, we get that, but at the same time sometimes the band's themselves do it so friggin' good (CCR) that you just grab the hits set, rather than the rest.
Pearl Jam for example...
If I want an album experience -- I almost always grab Ten.
But if I want a Pearl Jam experience -- I grab Rearviewmirror. I don't cherry pick like Vitalogy one day and No Code the next.

Which is the exact reason I don't own GNR's greatest hits, though I do love their version of "Sympathy for the Devil". But I do own versions of Tom Petty, Aerosmith, CCR, Boston, Poison, Motley Crue's greatest hits packages. I do own some other CD's by those bands, but the greatest hits covered enough for me for the most part.
Good selections. CCR hits are killer! Have it on my computer and blast it all the time. xD

You know what, that's probably where my disconnect comes from on this. The only reason I initially got an ipod was because it gave me the ability to travel with my entire music collection. So if I'm in the mood for something, but not a specific album I'll just put that artists discography (what I have of it anyway) on shuffle.

Yeah, I got Decade of Decadence too. I even liked the 3 new songs they put on that disc. Then I went back and got Dr. Feelgood, but that's the extent of my Crue collection. Aside from "Too Young To Fall In Love", it's all I need.

The absolute worst band as far as hits collections go is Kiss. They have more GH albums than actual albums, and to add insult to injury the track lists are almost identical. You get no bonus content like demos or B sides or even live versions. Just pure laziness.
The GH sets I like to get are from 1-2 hit artists/bands where the GH is literally all you will ever need. You get the song(s) you like plus get to hear some of their other material that you would ignore otherwise.
I agree that CCR pretty much have THE best GH set(Chronicle I and II). That old Doors 2 disc set also one of the best GH ever released. Lionel Richie also has a killer GH that has solo material along with the Commodores.

Bon jovi's recent Greatest Hits is the only album by them I haven't bought which is big time if u know what a fan I am.
If u have "Crossroads" U don't need the other.
Love their "This Left Feels Right" Greatest Hits where they change the songs arrangements etc.
Aerosmith and Kiss have WAYYYYYYYYYY too many Greatest Hits

..And look KISS just came out with another Greatest Singles/Hits album after they released Monster. Quite silly if you ask me. I personally think The Police came out with a pretty sweet hits compilation set. Might pick it up one of these days. Just keep forgetting.

Definitely don't mind greatest hits albums as long as they are put together the right way. The GN'R Greatest Hits album is a huge slap in the face. Appetite alone is basically a greatest hits album all by itself and the damn thing only has 3 tracks represented on the "greatest hits" package. Total bullshit. I count no less than 4 classic AFD tracks that were left out (Easy, Nightrain, Brownstone, Rocket Queen). You couldn't go to any GN'R concert at any time and avoid hearing these songs. That's how important they are to the band's legacy.

Yep, The Police have a pretty good greatest hits too, being just a casual fan of theirs. Forgot about that one, but I own that as well.
