Re: Chris Rock thinks today's comedians aren't bringing the funny
He's right. It doesn't help that everybody are a bunch of pussies. "It's the pussification of America" - Bubba The Love Sponge, lol.
You can't do anything anymore without offending someone. I remember Nick DiPaolo telling a story about how he played this college in upstate New York where a rash of suicides had happened, and he told a joke on the stage to the students about "I had some trouble finding a place to park. I didn't want my car to get hit by a chemistry major", or something like that. People got offended.
But then you have what Dane Cook did earlier this year with the Aurora shooting. Not only was his joke offensive, but it wasn't actually funny, which is really what buries you.
There are NO Rodney Dangerfield's out there, and I doubt there ever will be again.

Re: Chris Rock thinks today's comedians aren't bringing the funny
Never thought Chris Rock was funny, so it's interesting to see him whining about other comedians for not being funny enough. Pryor and Carlin are my favorites and always will be.
Re: Chris Rock thinks today's comedians aren't bringing the funny
Not only that but guys like Hicks and Carlin spoke about things that mattered. They were funny as hell but also social commentators (and a lot deeper than Rock's sthick). Nowadays it's just dick jokes.

Bill Hicks should be the first name on any list. I just don't get why more people haven't heard about him.
Bill Hicks was great. Carlin himself even ripped off some of Hicks' material.

Two reasons imo, 1) He died too young, and 2) Denis Leary basically ripped off his entire act.
I think if Hicks had lived long enough to see the more modern era of comedy and the easy access to material, I think he would've become a legend everyone knew of. He was always an underground comedian and he would've thrived in today's environment as some sort of rebel imo.
Leary I think took Hicks' act, streamlined it, so it could be sold to the masses. Almost like a Chris LeDoux to Garth Brooks-type scenario. Leary pushes, but only enough to appeal to a mass audience looking for that kind of comedy. He's not as smart as Hicks, and Leary lacks the passion of Hicks. Leary does schtick from a P.O.V. of anger. "I'm Irish, and i'm pissed off". Hicks did it from a P.O.V. of reform, change, and "this world is fucked up, and i'm going to shove truth down all of your throats and have a few laughs in the process".
Bill Hicks was the anti-dote to civilization.
I think had he lived he would've continued to push. Leary pushes, but it's a generic, conformist-style of pushing it. So he says "asshole" alot. Big fuckin' deal.
