Re: Fiona Apple Cancels Tour To Be With Her Dying Dog
i don't care for dogs. i find this less understandable than missing a gig cause you wanted to watched a basketball game or were eating dinner. those impulses/decisions are more 'human' to me than caring for a fucking dead animal. i do get it, in that these things are inherently selfish, but i don't see why you'd have to miss your work for any of those reasons.
but that's me. i don't 'get' dogs.
or pets.
i guess i'm more superhuman.
It's ok, not everybody has feelings.

Have you ever had a dog?
Obviously everyones different. If it were a dying person I probably wouldn't give a shit lol, but I appreciate wanting to be their for her dog.
Also her "animal" isn't dead. Her friend is dying and she wants to be there to provide comfort - just like most of the human race does for other humans.
Would you tell a dying (human) friend that work is more important than providing them with comfort and friendship in there final hours/days/weeks of need?

Ha that's brilliant
Nah I never had a dog. It's why I'm bemused & interested in these reactions. I've never understood people's affection for them.
I don't think I'll ever be able to understand how to see a dog as a friend. I know lots of dog lovers & it's the same I just don't get it. They say they're companions n shit but to me it's just a tame animal..
Lemme ask u this, would u phone ur boss & ask them to postpone your work so you could spend some time w/ur dying dog?
I could understand needing time off if it was a human family member but this... well I dunno. Could she not have just put the dog to sleep & moved on w/her life??

Too much?
Nah, not too much.
She may not do the numbers she used to but for whatever reason, she's got a pretty strong following still.
I actually always liked her, and liked that she kinda put her middle finger up to the business. I just figured she set me up for that joke, so I should go for it.
As for her dog, i've had a few dogs in my life die on me, and it's tough, REAL tough.
But I can honestly say, for as much as I adored them, took care of them, cleaned up after them while they were dying, disposed of them (this is the tough part, jesus)... I couldn't see me cancelling and blowing off a tour to return home for one dying.

They provide an unconditional love you just don't get from anywhere else. As I type this, Whiskey is sound asleep on the couch beside me. Glancing it him just now, my heart filled with love before I even typed this next sentence.
To answer the professional aspect; Yes I absolutely wouldn't hesitate to call my superior about a health situation with my pet.
Reading stuff like this I have 2 reactions; firstly I think you're nuts, then I start to think hold on maybe it's me there's something wrong with & start to freak out a little..

I dunno johndivney, I don't like to judge you by your views in this thread.... But I'm trying....
BUT, for you to think that watching a basketball game, or eating a meal (both things done for self enjoyment) are more reasonable excuses for canceling a tour, than spending time with an lifelong pet, and to show it care in it's final days (in other words, doing something selfless).
Then I can't really argue logically with you about why I think Fiona's actions are more than acceptable here.

Without a doubt I would take time off work. When I lose Elliott (my dog) I'm probably gonna need years off
I've watched him grow up from being a tiny pup that I could hold in one hand to the big cuddly bugger that he is now. He's just always been at my side, there when I wake up on a morning, sits with me whilst I work during the day, and still there when I go to sleep.
Unlike a baby he doesn't piss and shit in a nappy and need changing. He doesn't cry all night long keeping everyone awake. He doesn't need the latest expensive gadgets, quite happy with just a tennis ball or two and some of your attention. I could probably list another dozen reasons why I love dogs and hate people
