Re: AC/DC Discussion

Saw this earlier today. I'm pretty excited because I was thinking about getting Highway and Dirty Deeds sometime soon or just a couple of songs off the store. I'm not a huge fan of AC/DC; but I love rocking out to them when I come near their music. Can't seem to find my AC/DC shirt though.

Hopefully this means iTunes will finally develop a "Greatest Hits" package for them, something they've NEEDED for a long time.

I'm a massive Ac/Dc fan so it's somewhat irrelevant to me as I have all the albums already in various formats.

But it's interesting that the last holdout to itunes has fallen.

The crime of the modern music industry I think was that the labels themselves did not create an itunes style platform first.

Itunes was designed by Apple to sell ipods....so it was a loss leader for them...they can do things that are great for ipod users - but questionable for the record labels... like insist that songs be cherry pickable not just album releases - like forcing the price to be 99c. When the labels didn't like it - apple told them it was better than free @ napster. But that's fine for apple to say - afterall they're not trying to make a buck on the music - it's all about hardware to them.

Anyway it's done now, and well past the time to fix it. So we'll get what we get I guess - which is poor resolution audio with an odd pricing structure and the absence of new bands wink

That's simply not true about the new bands. Maybe from a money standpoint, but from an artistic standpoint if you're gonna shit on the "nature of the beast" and "progress" argument of the internet, than you've gotta give the beast credit for the fact it's exposed the world to far far FAR more no-name, no-heat artists out there trying to get their music heard that anybody with 'net access and a cell phone can find randomly browsing YouTube.

I do agree about the loss of quality audio, but then again we lost LP's also to 8-tracks and cassettes... and then CD. Most independent artists, if you buy that sorta thing (I do) provide MULTIPLE versions of audio away from Apple, and use grassroots ways of promoting. I like that. I buy albums, tracks all of the time that come with MP3's for MP3 players, and also an option for FLAC audio that I can convert to WAV and to audio CD for the full experience. Sure it's more labor-intensive than most are willing to do, but at the same time -- good audio and good pricing is not lost for consumers.

Eventually the industry will adapt and follow suit because audiophiles will demand it, no different than CD.

This sky is falling attitude with music lovers is kinda weak. It goes in phases guys. Always has. Nothing has been lost, this is just the transition phase finding itself again.

^ Interesting post dude.

I'll post more about this later (ranted enough today and badly have to do some work lol) but in short what bothers me about the current industry is the lack of a middle man.

You know why I ever heard of U2? Island Records told me they were good. Know how I heard of GNR? David Geffen told me they were good.

The downside of that middle man thing is some suit decides what will sell and what wont and what we get to hear. The upside is by the time you hear an artist - sure it's been homoginised a little - but it's also had a bucket of money thrown at it to make it pro quality

( I know, I know recording is cheaper than ever...they tell me this...but pro mixing and mastering is expensive, gear is expensive, artwork is expensive, if you want to do shit on a level that actually competes...it still costs money that one doesn't earn if they also want to pay the rent and feed the kids etc)

and more importantly....someone has sorted through the unending list of bullshit out there to work out the cream of the crop.

I don't want to hear 2000 bands to get to a band that's half good. And that's something record labels for better or worse did for the consumer.

As much as it's cool when already famous people go independent, going independent is pretty unrealistic for a start-up unless you have some serious cash behind you or something truly truly epic in your band.

And the interesting thing about needing to be epic up front like that is a lot of great bands from the past (GNR excepted) did their awesome record a few records in....these days they'd never get made cos they'd go broke on the first one wink

Re: AC/DC Discussion

My bro got me Live at River Plate as a late Christmas gift today. Very thoughtful of him. Didn't expect anything. Going to sound like a rock'n party when I blast these discs on my laptop or at a friend's house sometime soon!
