I don't know about uneducated when it comes to music BUT I can say through my experience and in my opinion the Gn'R fanbase as a whole is likley the most redneck, whitetrash, piece of shit fanbase I've ever come across. Present company excluded of course. Seriously though read the comments posted to Gn'R videos on youtube then go and try your best to find a bunch of comments as eaqually stupid on any other video. It's almost impossible. I've long been a  believer that Guns N' Roses attracts a redneck, racist, biggotted, white trash fan base. Sad but true I think. It's like the UFC. It draws in the fucking retards and the cool fans are in the vast minority for sure.

That ^ is likley to offend some but hey when have I been worried about that 16

I think in the past that was true. Honestly I think that description fits Metallica & Pantera more. When I was growing up, I didn't know one single diehard Metallica or Pantera fan that wasn't a huge white trash redneck.

Guns N' Roses my experience was a little different. Yeah there was that white trash sect that still thought "One In A Million Axl was speakin' 'da truth" types that unfortunately that song brought in.

But what I found was when meeting some people from South America, even then (this was mid-to-late 90's), they ADORED Axl. They LOVED GN'F'n'R's and Axl especially.

So I would say growing up, about 30% of GN'R fans I knew were white trash (Eminem types), and about the other 70% were ALL hispanic. Specifically South and Central American heritage. There were some Mexicans, but alot more from further down south. Columbian, Perubian, Brazilian (tons of them), Argentinians (EVEN MORE of them), etc.

The only guys still wearing GN'R shirts by the late 90's were guys from like Hondurous and Peru and Argentina, even in my small rural community.

Yeah I think the redneck thing isn't really accurate anymore. That was more a reaction by somewhat racist individuals against the popular rise of hip-hop in my own opinion and that wasn't really helped by songs like 1 in a million or in the case of Panthera some of the things Anselmo has said over the years on the topic of race.

I once had a few drinks with a black muslim guy from romania who had the AFD cross tattooed on his forearm. I thought that was great. The days of racism in music are getting further behind us, shame the same cannot be said for sport.

I know when I came across GNR at the age of 14 that was it for me. No other rock band mattered. They could not be topped  so I didn't try to find anyone like them because they wouldn't have been as good. It wasn't until my early 20s that I discovered bands like Soundgarden or even Zeppelin would you believe because I just didn't need them. What could they give me that GNR hadn't already pumped to the limit and delivered to my ears.

Stairway to heaven? Estranged Eclipsed it for me.
Beyond the Wheel? Back off bitch.
Smoke on the Water? Sweet Child.
Brown Sugar? Brown Stone.
Enter Sandman? Welcome to the Jungle.

GNR were almost too good. They set the bar very very high.

And see with that being said, I actually credit GN'R with getting me DEEPER into the education and appreciation of music.

No background at all for me in music. My parents frankly, were idiots concerning music. Sure they remembered reading music from band, but in terms of actual music history from their youth (which was a great period, the entire 70's decade), they just lived off the beaten path and weren't exposed to the music scene at all.

I, me, because of GN'R, I was actually the one to go back and re-introduce my mother to the music of her childhood. She told me one day she was eternally grateful for that. I was touched. I actually got her into the music of her youth in some time-reversal warp.

You can thank Axl Rose, Slash, Izzy Stradlin, Duff McKagan, Steven Adler, Matt Sorum & Dizzy Reed for that. They ultimately did it. axl92 izzy 21

i actually kind of agree w/the OP.

GnR were never a 'gateway' band for me. that's not STRICTLY true, but the only influences of theirs i came to thru GnR would have been bands you don't readily associate w/them, unless you dig into them - ELO & Elton John for instance, they're really the only 2 i got into due to GnR. (even then i'd prob be being generous, truthfully i came to ELO by way of Super Furry Animals).

the other influences they share such as The Stooges, New York Dolls, The Stones, Zeppelin, AC/DC, Aerosmith etc. i came to not because of GnR but of other ways. it was only after the fact i learned they were GnR influences - TSI was the last GnR album i got, bar CD obv.
by that i mean the stones/zeppelin/aerosmith are p ubiquitous, almost on a Beatles level of fame & exposure - elton John i was never exposed to cause growing up he wasn't 'cool' & the hits had dried up, neither were the stones considered particularly cool but you still heard them a lot more than you did elton john).

& this thing of not really being a gateway band has always been the case. i mean w/zeppelin & the stones & the beatles you dig into them & you get to the blues & early rock n roll & seemingly endless great music. you don't get that experience from GnR, & that's maybe cause what went before them wasn't as good as what they were.
i mean for every great stones or beatles song, you got a great robert johnson or little richard tune or buddy holly or roy orbison or elvis or muddy waters or bo diddley song, it's a really neverending exploration once you get thru those bands & into their influences. or the link between dylan & say the anthology of american folk music. i don't get that w/GnR, & that's simply because their statement & style was perfect & it was somewhat closer to being unique than any other major band outside of the beatles. they were universal, catholic in their appeal & approach. GnR took everything, pop, punk & rock n roll & brought to it a freshness & honesty & amazing, amazing tunes & combined it all in a way those bands of course didn't really have the chance to (tho the stones & dylan prob were punk before anyone thought of the term). they just encapsulated the spirit of rock n roll's history in their songs , & then they did it even better.

know what i mean?
let me try n clarify.
Radiohead. this was the first band that i got into that were really mine, y'know. GnR was passed down from my bro & maybe Nirvana & grunge from my sister, but Radiohead were my discovery & my own love (Oasis just didn't cut the mustard really, their lad culture i found somewhat off-putting as well as their multitude of boring songs).
but gradually overtime as i past thru Radiohead onto the likes of Can & Kraftwerk they got pushed well down the pecking order. now i have a passing interest Radiohead, i'm left relatively nonplussed by them to be honest. but for years i was hardcore, i was there for Kid A leaking, the Amnesiac surprise, the HTTT leak debacle (i remember vividly d/lin & uploading w/intense excitement & anguish over fucking dial-up speed internet - trying to d/l 13 songs in about the same amount of hours, oh those were the days!!). but now, i've completely dropped off.
that, maybe unfortunately, has never happened w/GnR. i still get ridiculously excited by AFD/UYI. it's still music that resonates so deeply it's bizarre, i still get that crazy chemical reaction from GnR that i did when i was a teenager, it's like an invincible energy.

so yea, i can excuse people for being solely hardcore GnR fans & not really feeling the need to investigate further. i have investigated further & rarely found anything as great.
that's not to say there isn't greatness out there (i dunno anymore if i could say AFD is unquestionably my favourite album ever), i'm just saying GnR are as good as it gets so can understand people not needing to find other music.

Quite possibly the most ludicrous thing I've ever read it all my years of visiting forums. And did you later claim "Back off Bitch" to be a great song???  ("Beyond the Wheel? Back off bitch").  That's one of the worst songs they ever put out??!
.

Sorry gang, AFD was a darn near perfect album.  Darn near perfect, but it was lightning in a bottle.  Lies was ok but a filler EP since the followup wasn't coming out anytime soon enough to make the label happy.  UYI was good, pretty good, but alot of bad tracks, easily should've been one album, then the music world moved into an entirely new direction immediately after it's release. Axl threw a huge hissy fit shortly thereafter, and kicked out the band.

GnR was a great band.... for a very short time. (87-92 which if I'm not mistaken is about when CD came out till now. Kinda makes you think!)
