Just had a talk with a friend who said GNR fans R uneducated on music.
Her theory was this: Because GNR seem so perfect, many people never move beyond them. GNR fulfills all their rules for what constitutes the perfect rock band so they halt there and never discover other forms of rock n roll....
At first I wanted to punch her, but.... It may be right.
For instance how many GNR fans could recite the lyrics to Stormrbinger (Deep fucking Purple) ???

That's definitely the most interesting take i've heard. I don't know if we're undereducated. What happened with me, is I was too young to really absorb the bands/artists. I just liked certain songs, and knew who made them, but didn't really think much of the deeper aspect of it.
Years later when I got older and deeper, and life got real-er, I started to "get" the songs. Once I mastered GN'R, I moved on to re-exploring the back catalogs of the ones I also liked, and also re-tried others I kinda passed on.
I don't think GN'R fulfill every musical need. I still think a GLARING hole in the GN'R catalog is that missing grunge/blues-influence 1995 album that would've been the swan song to the Axl/Slash/Duff dynamic. With Axl neck deep in Seattle influence, Duff back in Seattle near dead from booze/drugs, and Slash writing some of the bluesiest riffs of his career... if that album existed -- THEN I would say it fulfilled all of my musical needs.

I don't know about uneducated when it comes to music BUT I can say through my experience and in my opinion the Gn'R fanbase as a whole is likley the most redneck, whitetrash, piece of shit fanbase I've ever come across. Present company excluded of course. Seriously though read the comments posted to Gn'R videos on youtube then go and try your best to find a bunch of comments as eaqually stupid on any other video. It's almost impossible. I've long been a believer that Guns N' Roses attracts a redneck, racist, biggotted, white trash fan base. Sad but true I think. It's like the UFC. It draws in the fucking retards and the cool fans are in the vast minority for sure.
That ^ is likley to offend some but hey when have I been worried about that

if i don't listen/like deep purple i'm uneducated in music?
i can name 10 artists i think are the shizzle off the top of my head that some people never heard of or don't like at all. all of them discovered after finding gnr. does this make everybody else uneducated in music? it's a matter of taste after all.

Id substitute GNR and replace it with Prince. Cause after hearing Prince, I can't listen to any other R&B Pop Funk Soul etc.

I think in the past that was true. Honestly I think that description fits Metallica & Pantera more. When I was growing up, I didn't know one single diehard Metallica or Pantera fan that wasn't a huge white trash redneck.
Guns N' Roses my experience was a little different. Yeah there was that white trash sect that still thought "One In A Million Axl was speakin' 'da truth" types that unfortunately that song brought in.
But what I found was when meeting some people from South America, even then (this was mid-to-late 90's), they ADORED Axl. They LOVED GN'F'n'R's and Axl especially.
So I would say growing up, about 30% of GN'R fans I knew were white trash (Eminem types), and about the other 70% were ALL hispanic. Specifically South and Central American heritage. There were some Mexicans, but alot more from further down south. Columbian, Perubian, Brazilian (tons of them), Argentinians (EVEN MORE of them), etc.
The only guys still wearing GN'R shirts by the late 90's were guys from like Hondurous and Peru and Argentina, even in my small rural community.

It's an interesting theory and quite likely. When I was a teen in the early 90s, I really didn't have too much desire to find new music after I found GN'R. They didn't have much material, but that was A+++. After GN'R, I was looking for albums - I couldn't stand those records where you got like 1 or 2 good songs and the rest was filler. But I found Led Zeppelin, Skid Row, late Beatles Queen etc., so I'd say that although I wasn't open for a lot of bands and sometimes lost patience too soon with a new band, I did explore quality music. GN'R set the standards higher, for sure.

Don't really know any GN'R fans in real life, but the guys I see wearing their t-shirts in the street certainly don't look like they're on their way to punching a clock at Johnson & Johnson. Or any (legit) job for that matter.
While the perfection argument was true for me for a while, I don't think it's got a lot to do with that. Most people on this board know every in and out of this bands work, and most also do have a broad taste in music. I'm thinking, if true, it may apply more to casual GN'R fans. The redneck faction for this band is admittedly quite significant. But that's to be expected with those lyrics and the whole image they still carry.

I used to think I knew a lot of music until I got to know some of the people here and what they listen to.
Now I understand that I know a lot about music theory, but I don't know nearly enough about popular (and in some cases unpopular) music.
