Re: The MLB Thread
Braves played poorly, so I don't think they deserved to win that game. Even with the bogus infield fly call. They were booting balls, throwing balls away. It was just a sloppy effort. It's like the pressure got to them.
The Orioles have been doing this all season, and nobody can figure out why. On paper, the Rangers are a FAR better team. I saw Joe Saunders was starting and couldn't believe he was their best option. I mean, I know they had to play their regulars right up till the last day to fight for the division, but surely they could do better than Joe Saunders. And the guy goes out and gives up 1 run, handing a 2 run lead over to their fantastic bullpen.
They're obviously doing something right and I don't see any reason for that to change now. So even though the Yankees would appear to be the better team, I fully expect Baltimore to give them everything they've got. And damnit all, I think they take them down. I think the Yanks would've much rather played the Rangers. Texas picked the most inopportune time to play their worst baseball of the season. They just folded down the stretch. Losing an improbable lead in the division and never really getting it going tonight. Not the way you want to go out.

Key play early in the game was Hamilton grounding into the double play with runners on 1st and 3rd with no outs. Yeah, they tied the game but they could have had so much more.
Hamilton looked awful this game striking out 2 times and that critical GIDP. Napoli didn't look much better with 2 strikeouts including 1 when there were runners on 1st and 3rd with one out.
I bet both those guys don't come back next year in Texas. I give the Orioles credit. They did just enough on offense to win. I don't think Saunders pitched particularly well but he located his off speed stuff well and got helped with some impatient Texas hitters.
I still think the Yankees win against the Orioles. At some point, the Orioles all or nothing approach will hurt them. I have to admit it is kinda cool for Showalter to be managing against the Yankees in the playoffs.

I've heard that, and have been saying it myself all season now. It still hasn't happened, so I've stopped expecting it. The Yankees aren't a "great" team either. They have plenty of flaws themselves. Talk about all or nothing. That team has major issues scoring runs without the assistance of the long ball. Their starting pitching is better than the Orioles, but not great. The O's only finished one game behind them. I see no reason they can't take them down. And oh, how I'd love it. Would like to see Baltimore and Oakland. In the NL, Cincy vs. Washington. Some new blood into the mix. It's good for the game.
Also, I'd like to see the Red Sox take a shot at signing Napoli in the off season. They could use him primarily as a 1B, which they need, and as a backup catcher. They have Ryan Lavarnway, who they hope could be the catcher of the future, but he had a down year and doesn't appear ready to be a full time catcher. Salty had a good year power wise, but there's major questions about how he handles the pitching staff. The numbers with him behind the plate are staggeringly bad. Could be a coincidence, but it is a concern.
Re: The MLB Thread
I hope you're right Russ, as a Yankee hater. That would be about my prediction as well.
Cardinals, UNBELIEVABLE comeback tonight. Down 6-0. Ridiculous. They are proving once again to be a tough out come October. No one team stands above another at this point, so why not the Cardinals? AGAIN!
Re: The MLB Thread
Just my luck I sleep through the best playoff game of the year...Again. Slept through last years World Series Game 6 not thinking much of it, same thing today. Cardinals win a stunner,
And all my teams are after the ALDS/NLDS rounds. A's, Nats, Reds, and Orioles all out
Looks likes more football for me!

That was a really, really, brutal loss by the Nationals today. Only caught the ending but man they were like one strike away from advancing to the NLCS. I don't really hate the Cardinals but I'd rather not see them win the World Series again.
Not a Yankee hater but my loyalties will be towards Jim Leyland and the Tigers. And I hope he wins another World Series. It'll make him one of a select few who have managed World Series winners in both leagues.
I'll be rooting for the Giants as well in the NL.
Re: The MLB Thread
Barring an epic collapse by the Cards, looks like it's a 2006 WS Rematch with Tigers vs Cardinals. Be rooting for the Tigers as previously mentioned.
Is this where offseason news goes too? The Yankees got eliminated and Arod might be on the block. They are also a really OLD team. Most of their regulars are in their early to mid30s. Even Robinson Cano is 30 (in three days) and there doesn't seem to be any position players that are MLB ready. They might have to spend a lot maybe next offseason or just trade some of these stars to get younger position players. The pitching is a diferent story with Nova and Hughes and Phelps under 30 and Sabbathia is only 32.
Hard to believe but the Red Sox might be better positioned for the future than the Yankess. And I think very few would have said that after the big August dump trade. And yes, I know the Yankees will probably sign a few players to fill some of the position player holes they will eventually have.
