I'm probably gonna get destroyed for this, but I've never understood why people like Puppets more than Justice.
I agree. I always liked Justice more than Puppets. I compare this scenario to U2's Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby. Joshua Tree is considerd their best album by joe public and music publications but poll U2 fans and Achtung Baby consitently comes out on top. Obviously I don't know how it works with Metallica fans but I do know that more of my friends and myself tend to like Justice better than Puppets yet I recognize that the common perception is Master of Puppets is their best album.
As for Guns N' Roses its funny cause I've never once in my life considerd them heavy metal. Never. Even when I first got into them I just looked at them as a rock band.

I've never ever considered GN'R a metal band either. No different than I never ever considered ANY Seattle band a metal band, no matter how many people tried to correlate SG & AIC to the scene.
But at the same time, it's not a crazy ass stretch for that classic lineup, plus AFD, plus Ritz '88 to be thrown into the metal pit. They rocked as hard as any metal band, with just as much fuck you attitude. They were heavy.
But outside of AFD, ANYTHING else and I mean ANYTHING associated with GN'R past that, including Lies was just full on hard blues rock.
Based on studio output, Metallica hasn't really been a metal band since the Black album, either. A one off with Death Magnetic, don't count.
Oh and btw, Kill 'Em All and Ride The Lightning FUCKING CRUSH Puppets & Justice.
