Re: Best Band BLS vs Monkey
Start it with John Bonham. Behind the kit, the best to ever do it .Thunderous beats with the ability to come up with some of the nastiest and utterly perfect fills. His double bass abilities would make Dimebag feel right at home. Fast or powerful, he is the best in the business. Helping him create the foundation and backbone is Cliff Burton. Deep in the pocket fast with a unique style helping to keep the groove and wall of sound strong.
Handling lead guitar duties is two different men. On one side of the stage you have Dimebag Darrell. Fast paced, high pitched, squealing demon, heavy, face melting riffs. With the abilty to write solo's that stand alone. Can also slow things down and squeeze out the emotion. Then on the other side is Toni Iommi contrasting Dime with his melodic, heavy, dark, giant riffs with that signature sinister tone. Bridging the gap between these two men is Billy Gibbons. Filling the space and connecting the lines with his bluesy influence and all around guitar skill when needed.
Fronting the band is Layne Stanley with Billy Gibbons handling backing vocals. Layne's raw voice and darker side of life lyrics gives this band just what it needed. Energy and rage. With an emotional side that would help create some tasty slower paced melodic songs with Toni or even Billy taking real lead.
I mean could you imagine a version of Tush by these guys? Paranoid? Man in Box, etc etc. I feel my band is the better of the two in this round.

Re: Best Band BLS vs Monkey
Monkey, you have some great guys in your band; but I'm going to have to go with BLS for the overall sound of the band he chose. BLS's players would work so perfectly together. Dime & Tony's lead playing over Layne's vocals with Bonham on the drum stool is the ultimate sell for me!

Thanks dude. Exactly what I had in mine when I decided to go this route. They just blend together.

Re: Best Band BLS vs Monkey
I'll give you my sales pitch:
Drums:
Tommy Lee. As a drummer Tommy Lee to me balances the line between technical and rock-feel. He's skilled enough to do some unusual beats, but he's also a team player musically who makes his beats fit the song rather than just being for the sake of technical prowess. He's also a hard hitter. He has a way of slamming the drums that drives rock songs and really adds to the mood. He's also a showman with that starpower chrisma. He's good at playing with the crowd during live gigs and there's something strangely watchable about him on stage - both when he's bantering and when he's playing drums.
Bass:
Duff McKagen. I don't really need to sell duff around these parts I guess. He's got that feel. That vibe. That ability to lock in with the drummer and really add something to a song. I think he'd really click with Tommy's drumming, resulting in a rhythm section that was a total powerhouse. Duff's also got vocal ability for backing vocals, and general songwriting and musical ability that could be added in on occasion. He could also do what he did in GNR, subtly influence the sound with his style, even in songs that were not something he'd compose directly. He's also great to watch on stage.
Vocals:
W. Axl Rose. Remember - this game is picking people in their prime - so I'm talking about the Axl who sings on "You're Crazy" - the Axl who recorded AFD. We're talking pre-chinese democracy, pre-hermit, pre-teambrizil, pre-braids, pre-fink, etc . The Axl who sang Hair of the Dog live with Metallica and looks like he could rip you apart. The axl who still did interviews. The Axl who while he was clearly a little unhinged, got shit done, and was a fundamental part of the GNR that conquered the world and made those killer albums we all love. That's the Axl in my band. He's got amazing vocal range, amazing vocal power, deep psychological lyrics, and a dangerous amount of stage presence and charisma.
Guitar:
Dave Mustaine. Speaking of Axl...the problem with GNR post Izzy/Slash has been a lack of real solid riff based guitar writing. Enter Dave Mustaine. Non-megadeth fans may not realise but Mustaine is an absolute riff-lord. The guy seems to have an almost endless supply in his head of powerful and intricate guitar riffs. Writing is not an issue with dave in the band - the average megadeth song has like 5 riffs in it - each of which could be a song in itself really. Dave's also a decent lyricist - and often has thought provoking ideas in his music while his singing voice isn't for everyone - he could definitely add some flavour as a backing vocalist. At his peak his angry and societal questioning attitude could mesh well with Axl's own anger, and Duff's punk philosophy. Mustiane also has a very strong will. He came back from an injury that should have stopped him playing guitar forever to be better than ever. His huge willpower I think would also be a strong counter balance to Axl. You might think they'd implode. But I think another of the problems of new-gnr has been that no one is on Axl's level either creatively or in terms of authority. Sure Axl likes to be in control - but I think in the Izzy/Slash era so much success was achieved by being able to tap into Axl's crazyness but still keep a lid on him. I believe a mustaine-axl relationship would be similar.
Additionally, Dave is also a killer soloist. He can shred like a mother - and not only that - but his shredding is very artistic in that his guitar parts are complex but his solos always add a specific sound or mood to the music. He's not just ripping stuff out but he's communicating textures and mood and emotions with the guitar lines.
Guitar 2:
Joe Satriani. In terms of his general outlook, satch is sort of the odd one out in this band, but he's so easy going that he'd fit right in anyway, and he's so talented that he can add depth and levels to areas where the others may be weak. As a guitarist - Satch is absolutely at virtuoso level - he can literally play anything in the world he is given to play by the others - and also compose quite astounding guitar works of his own. He has a huge knowledge of musical theory - and so can add depth to any ideas presented by the other songwriters in the band. He's also a good foil for mustaine - as we've seen in megadeth that dave's angry style is well suited against more "pretty" players like marty freedman is. Satch/Mustaine I think would be a similar relationship - with each pushing the other out of his comfort zone and striving to reach new levels. Also - if mustaine has a any kind of weakness (which is doubtful) it's that he's mostly about thrash - and joe's presence would allow for a greater range of styles to be incorporated. This would allow the band to be a but like UYI era gnr I think in the sense that an album could have songs that were significantly different to each other but all masterful.
Utility:
Richard Wagner. People who don't follow "classical" music may not be aware of Wagner - he composed many things you've probably heard anyway - for example - Ride of the Valkyries - used in the helicopter scene in Apocalypse Now. To give you an idea of what he does his works are "notable for their complex texture, rich harmonies and orchestration, and the elaborate use of musical themes associated with individual characters, places, ideas or plot elements."
Wagner is the secret weapon in this band. Think about the grand nature of Axl's ideas and works. Wagner is the guy to pull it off. He can compose themes, and orchestration at true genius level. His addition would add the musical variety needed to keep Axl from getting sick of the hard rock/metal genre. Satch could play anything he cooked up. Meanwhile - think about what Wagner achieved in his era with the musical instruments of the day - the beauty of his themes - and the excitement he could create with horns and stuff - and then think about what he could do with modern toys - with all of protools at his disposal - and with a sonic assult of someone like Dave Mustaine of medadeth at his disposal. It's mind boggling.
And so I give you my band - intricately picked to be watchable, musically unstoppable and with forces within the band that balance wach other out and would push the talents of each guy to new heights.

Re: Best Band BLS vs Monkey
I hear ya.
They are both band leaders and said to be control freaks.
The theory is they actually balance each other out a little though. As I think Axl's "ways" have got significantly worse since the loss of Izzy+Slash who combined used to kind of keep him in some sort of vague check.
This is also early axl - who had the fire to do things and who while angry and so on - seemed more willing to play the game in terms of interviews and getting shit organised and actually done.
Likewise Mustaine is wild but he gets shit done. 13 albums.
He's come back from things that would end a normal person's career if not life.
I think they'd disagree on stuff, but I also think they'd inspire each other to new levels, and they're kind of equals in terms of insane talent level and slightly psycho outlook....so I think they'd end up with a heathy respect and keep each other in line.

Re: Best Band BLS vs Monkey
Oh also...Satch is the bridge between Axl and Mustaine.
Much like Izzy/Slash era.
Axl respects Satch - he tried to get him in the band pre-bumblefoot.
And I've met Satch - he's real nice. So he could get on with both of them and he'd relate to mustaine's love of guitar.
So like say Mustaine and Axl argue - then satch can calm both of them down. And explain each's ideas to the other nicer.
Also - with wagner around smashing out Axl's grand ideas - Axl's significantly happier musically than he was in GNR.
Also duff is always a bit of a peacemaker!
