Re: Overrated Bands
For a LONG time I was on a personal crusade against Creed for being 100%, complete and totally overrated.
Until about 2003 came around and everybody else on the planet realized Creed is crap also.
Slightly off topic, did you ever see the episode of Jamie Kennedy Experiment (Similar to Punk'd but actually was out before it) where he is down in Myrtle Beach or Cancun on Spring Break, and posts huge signs up for 'Creed - Live tonight'. Then as the crowd gathers & anticipation builds, the curtain rises & he's some old hippie with a sign "Joe Creed" behind him onstage. Tons of drunk college kids are standing around looking like "WTF is this?!" while he's up there playing some old crappy acoustic guitar. I'll look for it on youtube.

I'm going to say the Beatles are overrated. But that's just based on the fact that everyone pounds their almighty greatness over my head, and when I listen to them I just don't feel it. I'm probably just too young.
i pretty much agree with all the bands named here but this one stands out for me: The Beatles. i don't understand what was so special about them? yes, they have some nice songs but they don't sound so phenomenal to me? and everybody was nuts about them and a lot of people still are.

Infidel!
...But that's exactly what I would say about the Rolling Stones (I don't really own any of their albums, but I've heard the songs)
Re: Overrated Bands
never been a stones fan but i got a copy of Let It Bleed and i must say its fantastic
the thing with bands like the Stones and the Beatles is that there was nothing before them that sounded like it, its hard to envision but they "ARE" the grandfathers of rock

Re: Overrated Bands
I have to agree with the Beatles and The Stones being overrated.
The Beatles to me were the kings of the "jingle". It's not that they don't deserve credit but most of their music reminds me of the jingle for any given commercial advertising anything from cereals to underwear. Catchy stuff but for the most part nothing of real substance.
The Stones are a little tougher call. I don't like a great deal of their songs but I like enough to say they have did some solid work. Oddly enough I like many of the remakes of their songs better than the originals. They are definitely a good group and have without doubt earned their name in rock history, I just wouldn't put them as high on the list as most would.
Re: Overrated Bands
Personally I like The Stones. Great band.
As for the Beatles, I understand peoples viewpoints, however try to name 5 bands that were around before the Beatles, now name 5 bands that came out after them. As for lacking substance, they evolved, and helped shape music writing. Listen to I wanna hold your hand & Love Me Do, then 3+ years later they were writing A day in the life, Let it Be, Come Together & Strawberry Fields Forever. Pretty impressive evolution in a few short years, going from singing about a PG rated date to later basically singing about acid.

Re: Overrated Bands
I considered putting both Stones and Beatles in my first post however when I thought about it more I left them out. Considering how big both bands are I've never thought their music warranted such popularity, but you tend to forget they were really the first of their kind. Had either of them broken through in the 80's or even 70's they wouldn't even be half as big as they are. When current bands are asked their influences Stones or Beatles are usually mentioned and if they are not, then the bands that did influence them would have been influenced by Stones or Beatles, in terms of influence there's very few degrees of seperation between any band around today and these two bands. Better bands than the these two have come and gone since but they only got the chance because of the these two bands in the first place. I think musically perhaps they are a bit overated (Beatles more than the Stones) but their achievements and what they did for music warrants the hype imo.
