We have an Underrated Bands thread so why not have an Overrated bands too?

This is any band/artist you think gets more credit than deserved.

A couple from the past:

Janis Joplin - everyone loves her but I don't see why.  Some of her stuff is ok, but ok only...not legendary.

Jim Morrisson -  I like some stuff by the Doors but Jim's drug-induced jibberish is hardly the poetic "genius" he often gets praised for.

One from today:

Nickelback - they basically hail as king of rock-radio but every song sounds pretty much the same.

Good choices Gunslinger. I like the Doors, the whole "he's a poet" title confuses me sometimes. Although I think they are something you maybe had to live thru. Maybe like Eddie vedder, in 20 years they'll think he was some strange guy who sung wierd lyrics but at the time, it had a huge impact on songwriting of others.

IMHO Oasis is a bit overrated by some British. They are ok, but some in the UK talk about them being ofne of the greatest bands ever. Some great songs, 2 myb 3 good albums, I put them around Dave Matthews band or a little better than Live. Even a band like Weezer has more longevity.

Rush is a band I never got. Just never understood them. Talented musicians, just never liked the whole package.

Radiohead, a lot of people love them but I've just never got into them and I can't understand how anyone else does either.

Nirvana, they're the definitive band of the overated/underated arguement, and for me they're overated. I like them and like a number of their songs but they're not nearly as good as their popularity perhaps suggests.

Muse, undoubtedly one of the best live bands around, but whilst they have some songs that I really like a lot of their material just doesn't stand out beyond average for me.

That's an understatement...

Man go buy a copy of "The Bends", it'll change you.

I have to disagree with U2 due to longevity & changing it up with the times. 25 years of being relevant is an accomplishment. Achtung Baby & on is wayyy different from their 80's stuff, another achievement. I agree there are some diehard fans, and have always been, I never got them back then. But I give the band credit & respect them nowadays.

Nirvana I understand you nominating, but if you lived thru it, you know how they just exploded onto the music scene overnight & changed the music scene for years. MTV changed, got new DJ's, radio stations switched from trendy C&C music factory & MC Hammer to playing Jane's Addiction & RHCP. Granted, if they never formed these bands still were already popular, along with AIC & Soundgarden, but the explosion of Nirvana was something we won't see again for many years, who knows if it'll happen again but I'm glad I saw it ufold. It was likely similar to the Beatles & the British Invasion, the Grunge Explosion. (Not comparing Nirvana talentwise to the Beatles, but the rise to success)

Radiohead is good, and The Bends is great, as are some others, but I understand what APE is saying. Some people think they are far & away the greatest band of the 90's, & 1 of the best ever. I don't see it that way.

as for Nirvana...i dont think they were overrated...Cobain was what every kid in the world was feeling at the time...hes not the greatest guitar player or anythign ...but he was one of a kind...he was an amazing talent

I have to agree with U2. Now keep in mind I've had the albums and I've seen them live. Personally, U2's best era was the 90s, Achtung Baby and beyond. Once they got embarassed by taking too many chances and releasing a really cool album like POP, they sort of de-evolved into a less earnest version of their 80s selves. They sold themselves out in a sad way. I still don't get the hype of them being the greatest band in the world. Maybe the most captivating, for a time, but now they just bore me.

Nirvana. I like Nirvana here and there. What's overrated isn't their cultural significance, but their artistry. They're simply not that groundbreaking a band. They were the most marketable and commercially appealing of that "sound." Pearl Jam is the greatest grunge era band. Pearl Jam should be remembered as legends, not Nirvana. Nirvana didn't usher in a sound, they were MTV's face for a sound already gaining popularity. If they were simply highly regarded and remembered for being part of a cultural turning point, then no they wouldn't be overrated. But they're treated like gods and Kurt Cobain like some martyr prophet. But again, this is all just my own opinion.

Re: Overrated Bands

I usually say Nirvana is overrated because people know them as grunge and then don't know Alice in Chains, who I find to be more talented, have had better songs, and more impactful on rock music that followed.

I'm going to say the Beatles are overrated. But that's just based on the fact that everyone pounds their almighty greatness over my head, and when I listen to them I just don't feel it. I'm probably just too young.

Frank Sinatra. This one I believe in. Great voice, sure, but there were and are many great male jazz vocalists who can do what he does vocally, and are more original in style. I think he gained a lot of popularity just because he was white.
