Oscar-winning film star Ernest Borgnine dies in LA at 95

Ernest Borgnine, who created a variety of memorable characters in both movies and television and won the best-actor Oscar for his role as a lovesick butcher in "Marty" in 1955, died Sunday. He was 95.
Borgnine's longtime spokesman, Harry Flynn, told The Associated Press that Borgnine died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles with his family by his side.
A prolific and talented character actor, Borgnine was known for gruff, villainous roles such as the heavy who beats up Frank Sinatra in "From Here to Eternity" and one of the bad guys who harasses Spencer Tracy in "Bad Day at Black Rock."
Borgnine, who earned a salary of $5,000 for playing his Academy-Award winning role as Marty, once said "I would have done it for nothing."
He was also known as the Navy officer in the television series "McHale's Navy," which aired from 1962-66. Borgnine earned an Emmy Award nomination at age 92 for his work on the series "ER."
"The Oscar made me a star, and I'm grateful," Borgnine told an interviewer in 1966, according to AP. "But I feel had I not won the Oscar I wouldn't have gotten into the messes I did in my personal life."
The actor was married five times, including to singer Ethel Merman, who became his third wife in 1964. The marriage barely lasted a month.
Borgnine is survived by his fifth wife, Tova Traesnaes — whom he married in 1973 — son Christopher and daughters Sharon and Diana.

He is better known to kids of the 80s, like myself, for being on the show "Airwolf". Which he was absolutely awesome in.
Like he was all things. So many of my favorite movies as well. "The Wild Bunch", "Escape From New York", "The Dirty Dozen", etc.
A true original. A true legend. I knew it was inevitable, but man I do not mean the words Rest In Piece more than with Ernie. A treasure. And only days after Andy Griffith, another icon, passing away.

I remember watching some show in the early 90's where he played a doorman. I think the guy from Weekend at Bernie's was the star of the show (not Andrew McCarthy). Anyway, I liked that show. But this is my all time favorite Ernie Borgnine moment.
Edit - I had a feeling the guy's name was Jonathan Silverman. Apparently the show was more in the mid 90's and only lasted 3 seasons. The Single Guy.

I also got reminded he was on The Single Guy with Silverman. Not only did I forget about The Single Guy, I forgot Borgnine was on there AND I did NOT remember it lasting 3 seasons.
I think it went a few episodes and got cancelled. I did remember him spending the 90's/2000's doing guest star work primarily on shows like Walker Texas Ranger, The District with Craig T. Nelson, and he had a very good recurring role on ER in it's final season that earned him a Emmy nom (he lost to Michael J. Fox on Rescue Me).
But really Ernie on ER was kinda my final image of him (other than his cameo in "Red), and he was so good and so dramatic on ER that he was the best part of that final season of the show that limped to the finish line.

I completely forgot he was in Red! Great movie right there! All the younger kids are going to remember him as Mermaidman from Spongebob too which is a plus. Anyway, RIP. Quite a talent and terrible loss for Hollywood.
