Do you guys prefer Layne without AIC (Mad Season) or Jerry's solo stuff (Boggy Depot, Degradation Trip)?
Both are good, Boggy Depot has Jesus Hands and Degradation Trip has my favorite Cantrell solo song...Bargain Basement Howard Hughes but there is no match for Mad Season. That album (strictly in my opinion) beats the piss out of both solo albums by Jerry.

LAYNE STALEY: 'Get Born Again' The Movie In The Works - Feb. 20, 2008
Lathan McKay, the actor who will play late ALICE IN CHAINS singer Layne Staley in the upcoming movie "Get Born Again" '” based on the biography of Layne Staley by Argentinean journalist/author Adriana Rubio '” recently met with Rubio and they spent 10 days together working on the movie project. A local rock band, MOTHERWEISER, played numerous ALICE IN CHAINS songs to assist Lathan in his vocal performance and character development. When Lathan took to the microphone, Staley's presence "was definitely felt and acknowledged by everyone in the room," according to a press release.
McKay shares an incredible likeness to Layne Staley, and has an inner ability to channel Layne's energy.
Lathan has a tremendous respect for Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell's music, and is very passionate about the opportunity to portray Layne as the beautiful, talented soul that he was.
Lathan McKay was born on January 10, 1978 in Austin, TX. He started his acting career a few years ago landing one of the lead roles in a coming of age story set in suburban Texas, premiering at 2003 Tribeca Film Festival.

If it's done well it could be fantastic. Do you know if any of the AIC members (Cantrell, mostly) have commented on this?
I think it'd be hard to document the last years of his life. I mean, who saw him?

For you AIC fans I'm going to try (if I have the time over the next few days) to upload the much sought after "Heroin" by Alice in Chains. It is very hard to find and usually fetches 75-100 dollars minimum. It is not an official release but was produced by a small German bootleg company called "Ride the Tiger".
I'll upload it complete with downloadable artwork for you guys. Maybe some more will follow in the future if there is an interest.

That would be fucking fantastic Slinger. I wish I had more rarities to contribute but the only things I have are Blind Melon demos, which tend to be in low demand. Haha.

If all goes well I should have it uploaded by tonight or tomorrow morning. I have some other rare AIC stuff I'll add later on down the road as well.
By the way CC...there's nothing wrong with Blind Melon. That could have been a great group, Shannon was a big loss.

Slinger I never feel anything but pride in liking Blind Melon, I'm just saying that there's only a couple BM fans here and fewer that have all their released stuff and still want more. If it came out as shame, that was unintentional. In fact I've been emailing my local radio stations every day the past week to play the new BM single.

A new book based on late ALICE IN CHAINS singer Layne Staley's last five years of reclusive life in downtown Seattle is scheduled for release in late 2008. Entitled "Itch, Love Stories about Heroin", the book "will reveal some secrets about the singer, as well as offer an inside look at his addiction and struggles with heroin," according to a press release.
"It will be a struggle to finish the book," author Tanya Vece said. "It will be like closing a chapter on his life, and mine '” not for good but I think saying what he would want to have said."
According to the press release, "Staley did call in an interview to Vece's friend author Adriana Rubio about a month before his passing. Weak and coughing, Staley wasn't ready to comment on his reclusive life, but did talk briefly about his fight with drugs."
"Everyone knows he was addicted," Vece stated. "I want to talk about who he was, and get to the real Layne '” addiction and art."
When asked on her connection to Staley, Vece said "Let me just say there are some things I won't expand on '” some things even I will keep secret!"
Tanya Vece is the current editor of independent art e-zine The Horse Chronicles. She has three other fictional independent books out and is an honoree of the International Press Academy. Her recent accomplishments include press coverage through CNN for the Democratic debate in Las Vegas.

So back to the Cantrell v. Staley solo stuff discussion, I've been listening to Boggy Depot a lot lately.
But it just feels like a collection of good songs to me. Mad Season feels like someting more, it's purely magical. Those moments when Layne takes off, like in Wake Up, I'm Above, and Long Gone Day, are so special. I don't dig the rocker tracks a ton (I Don't Know Anything and Lifeless Dead) but as a whole its fantastic.
For some reason, I get the feeling that Cantrell is a prick when it's just him. I don't know why. I really dig his music but I find it hard to like him for some reason.

Here's a great little Layne Staley song with the band Second Coming. As you might guess, it's a little on the dark side. There's also concert performances of it youtube, but I like the studio version for beginners. Oh yeah, the song is 'It's Coming After'.
