Re: Overloaded - Bumblefoot
I dig Ron's cover of Strawberry Fields Forever and I've heard a good number of his solo songs with either a backing band or guitar instrumentals and for the most part they are pretty solid; but not mind blowing material. I could agree for the Gilby comparison for the most part; but I think Ron could write some great stuff with GNR if given the chance. The man could bring some good backing vocals into the mix with Tommy, Dizzy, or Chris. Since he's sings great live to back up Axl. Robin is a great guitar player (don't get me wrong); but he wasn't a great backing vocalist when it was necessary. He had some good moments helping the band out during some of the previous tours. Out of any of the guitarists in the current band, DJ would be the better option in writing great modern rock songs but allowing the other members to explode on record while giving it a good Guns yet radio friendly sound on top of that.
Re: Overloaded - Bumblefoot
I highly doubt Ron will be allowed any sort of backing vocals to Axl in-studio, short of just mixed down harmonies on a chorus.
Ron's voice is very campy, and I mean this with absolute seriousness... Ron would be PERFECT for a GN'R metal song, and that's about it. Ron's voice is so Mastodon and stuff like that, but outside of that, leaving the backing stuff to The General.

Metalcore singers suck
Ron needs songs he can basically growl and screech.
Are you calling Mastodon a metalcore band?
Ron's voice really is not that good. If he just kept his shit to songwriting and he got a good singer, I think he could go places.
Re: Overloaded - Bumblefoot
I think under the right circumstances, DJ Ashba has some "hits" in him guitar and melody-wise. He's already proven it with Sixx:AM. I also think Richard might have one or two. I don't think anyone's ever really given him a chance to play lead guitar in a blues-rock based band.
Probably not worse than anything Slash is doing today in the current. But Ron? Not a chance, it's just not there. Sorry Ron.
I still reserve judgement on Ron's song writing capabilities until I see what he can do with Axl. I'd like to think that Axl can raise the ability of anyone he works with. I agree DJ has proven his worth to an extent, but he also did so with a pretty established song writer in Nikki Sixx.

Despite all the feuding and back talk. In the end, Axl made an impact on the guy and helped make Slash a better guitar player by allowing him to let out his true potential even though Slash probably didn't like some of the songs. Through songs like November Rain, Estranged, Coma, and other pieces of music in the UYI until '95 when things were collapsing frequently.
