Based on the Catcher remix on CD.... no. Then again Brian May is a tough act to follow.

I had high hopes for it.

The solo on this song (starting around the 1:42 mark) is pure Brian May goodness

WOW that is Brian-like. That solo there is better than the redone one on Catcher.

Dig the hell out of that. 9

For all we know that might be why Axl brought Ron into the fold, is he can duplicate that Brian-sound that Axl was always into. Even looking back to the Robin/Bucket tag team, Axl seemed to be trying to find a way to put Brian into GN'R. I think there was a rumor one time that Axl asked Brian to join GN'R to replace Slash and Brian declined. Brian asked Axl to replace Freddie in Queen, and Axl declined. 16

I think Brian could have replaced Slash pretty well to be honest.

Ha ha. That is hilarious!

Dr. Brian May is a musical genius and I'll take his guitar playing over Slash's any day! W. Axl Rose + Queen? Sounds like an interesting idea. It would be pretty ballsy for Roger and Brian to try out.

I always thought Axl would be great in Queen for a tour. Much better than Paul Rogers. Would prefer to see Axl in Queen than Brian May in GNR.

Same here! Brian is too much of a talent and has a better resume and body of work that out classes GNR in my opinion.

If that's Ron at his best, I sure as shit don't want to hear his worst....

He's talented for sure but just does nothing for me. The songs just aren't there. I've yet to hear something from him that blows me away. I'll always give him props for the CD title track though.

Thayil's outro on Beyond the Wheel is better than anything I've heard from Ron.

Ron could probably play that with ease. He couldn't create it though. Bucket suffers from a similar problem as well. Dude can compose some incredibly beautiful songs that will bring you to tears but could sit there for a million years in silence if commanded to write a simple catchy song like SCOM or WTTJ.

I agree, and I think that's Ron's biggest detriment is that he doesn't really WRITE good original songs. Sorry Ron, I love you, but you are Gilby Clarke Part II: Super Shredder. Basically a shredding lead version of Gib. But like Gilby basically just played Izzy's part, Ron just plays Bucket's.

As for Axl and the replacement, Thayil would've been a good choice, but for the same reasons Cornell will never front VR (which would've been bloody fuckin' awesome), Thayil would never be in GN'R.

The best possible choice Axl would've had to replace Slash, would've been had he called Doug Aldrich. Doug bounced around in obscure bands in the 80's & 90's, but is mainly remembered today for being modern-revived Whitesnake's guitarist.

Aldrich would've been perfect for Axl's rebooted GN'R, had Axl tried what he has in 2009-12, in 2001-02.

Aldrich is basically a mixture of Slash & Bucket. Would've been PERFECT for Axl, and he would NEVER need two players in new Guns.

(see 1:59 for the Slash meets Bucket moment)

this entire song features Slash meets Bucket goodness

And finally Bad Moon Rising's "Tears In The Dark", Slash + Bucket epicness. I get a fuckin' hard on thinking of Doug playing Estranged, by himself, TWAT by himself, This I Love by himself.

Big fuckin' miss on Axl's part. Not to mention if Axl had gotten ahold of Doug before David Coverdale, Doug would've been just as loyal to Axl as Doug has been to David. Doug Aldrich has been for Coverdale, what Zakk Wylde was for Ozzy. Real similar personalities. Doug also has a very similar personalty to Ron. Would've been great with fans too.

Howard Stern mentioned to Slash yesterday that other guitarists can get up on stage with Axl and play things Slash wrote, but they couldn't write stuff like him from scratch.  I know we've all said or thought this, but I thought of Ron with that comment the most.  He's a damn virtuoso and can replicate pretty much anything that's been written.

I'm not going to say he can't write a good song under the GNR banner, because he hasn't been given the chance to yet.  But right now, Axl isn't proving anyone wrong that he doesn't need Slash.

I think under the right circumstances, DJ Ashba has some "hits" in him guitar and melody-wise. He's already proven it with Sixx:AM. I also think Richard might have one or two. I don't think anyone's ever really given him a chance to play lead guitar in a blues-rock based band.

Probably not worse than anything Slash is doing today in the current. But Ron? Not a chance, it's just not there. Sorry Ron.
