Re: The Naked and Famous
A sweet little band from New Zealand. They've got a very 80's new wave sound to them. Their album is called Passive Me, Aggressive You. I like it a lot. Here's a sample.
Young Blood
Eyes
Punching in a Dream
Girls Like You

Re: The Naked and Famous
Good... not great. Needs work. The biggest issue is all of the songs lack a really strong melody and chorus. There's no real hook that sticks in your head. It all kinda blends together, but not because the format is the same, but because there's no real divider between songs from the lack of those melodies and choruses.
Reminds me of some of the 80's-noir throwback pop stuff heard in the fantastic film "Drive" with Ryan Gosling.
Also has a real Australian flavor to it. If you ever listened to some of the pop that came out of the region during the mid-to-late 80's, alot of the music is very similar, in a throwback sense.
It's good, but like I said, needs more hooks, and less ambient electronic showing off.
Re: The Naked and Famous
I would have to disgaree completely. the whole appeal for me is the way they use the electronic elements. nothing about it is "showing off" in my mind. It's an almost perfect blend of up tempo ambience with pop music. It doesn't need hooks or vocal melodys "dumbing it down" to make it more appealing to the masses. The song Eyes is nothing short of fantastic when it's cranked up to 10 and you're driving down the highway on a sunny day. Also the songs Punching in a Dream and Young Blood for me are pretty damn catchy and do in fact stick in my head. Girls Like You is a little more subtle. Overall they all ahve a very soundtrack vibe to them and there's no need for hooks and melodies when the music creates an atmosphere. A nostalgic one at that like you suggested with the 80s throw back bands ala A-Ha, Men at Work(Australian), Human League, and even Tears for Fears. A lot fo that stuff was song made up of verses just as chatchy or "uncatchy", if it relates better, as the chorus.
Re: The Naked and Famous
Every single one of those artists had the actual catchy stuff i'm talking about, that's entirely missing here.
I don't hear "Take On Me" at all, which not only had the verses, but had the chorus as well.
The verses aren't really all that catchy here. You yourself admitted it has a soundtrack base to it, which is pretty much what i'm saying. I could see these songs moving along a city night scene in "Drive" or some Michael Mann flick.

This is exactly what I'm saying. It's great as is and doesn't need anything more. Like you said it's music that can move along a scence in a movie hence a very soundtrack vibe to it. It's an uptempo ambience and creates an atmopshere. No need for radio friendly catchy hooks and melodies in my opinion.
As for those other bands they had more than their hit singles. I didn't say you'd hear Take On Me. I suggested the vibe is similar.
