yes..they play normal dvds and (depending on the player) most upscale them also to simulate a higher resolution eg 1080p when you get a tv that can do that.
Although they are usually region locked for DVD...so you may need to consider what region your dvds are

Recent rumours about Toshiba's imminent exodus from the HD-DVD hardware and software business seem to have been correct.
According to EngadgetHD, quoting an article from Reuters, insiders at Toshiba have confirmed that the company intends to formally announce their withdrawal from the HD format war. This news paves the way for Sony's Blu-ray format to become the standard in what has been a long battle between the two rival factions.
While consumers are the ultimate winners here, many of them have already jumped on the HD-DVD bandwagon and are now faced the question of what to do about their recent investment.
As we recently reported, Amazon.com is offering 150 of their HD-DVD titles at 50% off, which means that if hardware prices take an equally steep dive in price, folks who don't mind shelling out a few hundred dollars could easily build a decent HD system and library, assuming of course they don't mind the idea of dwindling title selection in the coming months and years. After all, most HD-DVD players are also excellent standard DVD upconverters which means if you were considering buying a regular up-converting player, a few bucks more for an HD-DVD player may make sense.
On the other hand, now that Blu-ray has emerged victorious, would this be only slightly better than buying a Betamax player?

Yeah i wouldn't buy HD-DVD now - even if you get the titles and shit cheap - what happens when the player breaks down? Then you have to throw all those titles in the bin and get them again on Blu 
Its true it upconverts...so i guess its a cheap way to get a region free unconverting dvd drive. But then most blu players also upconvert....so i dunno...i'd stay away...the deals look tempting...but will be useless in like 2 years time.

Well its officially over folks.
TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Toshiba Corporation today announced that it has undertaken a thorough review of its overall strategy for HD DVD and has decided it will no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders. This decision has been made following recent major changes in the market.

yeah...i'd say that will happen fast...and probably other stuff like transformers would be out soon you'd expect just cos they must already have HD masters around to make them from.
I'm unsure about indy. One one hand I totally see your point...the new movie comming out = golden chance to re-release the old films in HD, tie them in with the HD release of the next movie I guess at the end of the year. Then again lucasfilm seem to be VERY slow on the release of this kind of stuff.
I'm not sure about in the states...but in Australia we waited years for the indy set to come on DVD...was years and years after DVD was released. I hope they don't do that again. Someone told me once they do it to make sure enough consumers have the technology before they release the biggest sellers (like starwars etc) to prevent them being older discount bin titles by the time the formats are in every home. Not sure if thats true or not.
The other thing I dream of is an Alien Quadrology box set in HD!!! Should come eventually!
