Re: Alice in Chains
I'm a greatest hits AIC fan. Top five
1. Them Bones
2. Rooster
3. Grind
4. Man in the Box
5. Again
saw them open for VR....I went mainly to see AIC. They were great, and I thought the new singer did a wonderful job and had solid stage presence, played a little guitar too. I think they could make a good album and have no problem putting the AIC label on it.

Re: Alice in Chains
AIC was a great band. Rooster was my favorite song when Dirt came out, so powerful & intense. Luckily I saw them on Lollapalooza 93 when they were about at their peak. Great set, great stage presence, Layne played guitar on a few. Cantrell did write alot of AIC songs and hits, but no one can deny Staley didn't add some special input into each song. His vocals hit some high notes no one else can match. A true talent in his vocal changes. There's a clip on youtube of James Hetfield playing with the new AIC on Would? James does a great job on it, but just can't get it on some of the vocals Layne could.
That said, I do think the new AIC could potentially come out with a solid album, with Cantrells writing & the new singers vocals, but it won't be the same. Or as good. It took me a while to warm up to them getting a new singer & moving on, but I've come to accept it. It truly is ashame how Layne died, just a decrepit, addicted hermit who was hardly ever seen in public his last few years. He was in a supergroup that covered Pink Floyds 'The Wall' with Tom Morello & I read somewhere he wasn't even in the video. They had to use old AIC footage from live concerts to edit him in. Even during their unplugged he looked pretty far gone. I think he only showed up a few minutes before it started.

^ Yeah, you're talking about Class of '99. They has to pull some clips of Mad Season live and try to match of his mouth with the words. Very sad. I can't imagine how awful Layne's state was, I mean he was too weak to do much of anything 6 or 7 years before he finally died.

Re: Alice in Chains
My copy of Music Bank came yesterday. It is very cool, a worthwhile box set for the price of $30. Those demos from their glam-ish days are really interesting, and the other songs I didn't have are pretty great too. Packaging especially was a treat. The way each disc is like a parody of their album covers, and the insides go witht he EPs... and the booklet was sweet too. Although some of Jerry's quotes are kind of sad because the tone of it all is that the problems were blown out of proportion and that they were all still friends (in 99). Quite obviously that wasn't the case.

Re: Alice in Chains
Do you guys prefer Layne without AIC (Mad Season) or Jerry's solo stuff (Boggy Depot, Degradation Trip)?

Mad Season is good, but those Cantrell records are fantastic. I also think you need the full 2-disc set to get the whole feel of Degradation Trip. I don't think the abridged version gets it done.
