Re: Does Talent create responsibility to use that talent?
The dude just spent like ten years of his life making multiple albums. Just because we've only heard one of them so far doesn't mean a lot of effort was not put into them.
I thought you've heard the next one?

perhaps you have selective information processing?

It's a fair challenge M. We all followed your previous scrape with GNR INC. closely. Don't think you said whole albums but other material definitely.

Re: Does Talent create responsibility to use that talent?
it may have been discussed elsewhere, but i was very clear that i was trying to avoid spoiling the next album for myself. i want to be able to buy it the day it comes out, drop the needle on the record, and be surprised. something i wasn't able to do in '08. something i regret not being able to do.

i dont remember the ins and outs of the last fairground ride but it was quite entertaining. i don't even care whether there was another album or not. But whenever I see your name its just too tempting to not refer back to it Its like the white elephant is in the room.
tbh i also feel the same way = i'd like to hear the next album 'fresh'. But those fake leaks i bought up a while back ('monstrosity' or whatever) i have to admit i clicked on them without hesitation.
The sad thing is I didn't have the same feeling as when the original cd clips/leaks came out - that was really cool - it just fed into the mystique and felt like you were tasting the forbidden fruit or something. Especially when Bucket was about - I just didn't know what to expect.

Re: Does Talent create responsibility to use that talent?
For the record I'm not trying to accuse Axl or anything, I'm just trying to sort out what my own thoughts on the subject are - even in topics outside of GNR - like my own band or people that write novels and so on.
For example, ever since DJ told that story about Axl sitting down and playing an awesome song at a piano one night that he'd never heard and Axl saying "it's just something I'm tinkering with".
It just makes me wonder. In some ways I agree he doesn't owe us anything at all, and should have the right to do what he pleases with his life. On the other hand, I can't get past the idea that if he dies (I hope not!) before doing those recordings then songs like that will be lost forever...which seems so wasteful!
Re: Does Talent create responsibility to use that talent?
Whether people share their talents for the benefit of others really IMO comes down to how narcissistic they are.
Obviously there is no requirement that any of them should. However, some individuals decide at times to do things purely for the benefit of others rather than for their own selfish desires.
Take for example doctors that might be specialised in a particular area. Many volunteer their time to take trips to third world countries and perform work on people for no benefit other than their own satisifaction from making some type of humanitarian contribution.
Are they expected to? No. Do they owe these people this? No. They are perfectly entitled to stay in their own country and spend that time seeing regular paying patients and continue to amass their fortune if they choose.
So why do some people do this? What is the point of doing things that benefit others, helping others, making other people happy? Maybe these people like to give something back once in a while. Maybe they recognise how lucky they are and therefore at times choose to put other peoples interests above their own for a change.
They are certainly not obligated to. So to relate it back to GNR, Axl can sit in Malibu Howllow for the rest of his life and continue to squander his gifted attributes if he chooses. It's his right, it depends on how narcissistic he is.
IMO he has already given a great deal of pleasure with the material he has already released. At the same time it's disappinting knowing his artistic potential (whether that be with the original band, the BH era or the current lineup) that we just haven't had the pleasure of sharing in more of his talent.

Re: Does Talent create responsibility to use that talent?
My feeling with Axl is that with 15 years of being the ultimate boss of all around him, its probably a real struggle for him to agree to throw himself back into 'the machine' of making albums, doing interviews, justifying his decisions and current position and explaining his journey...
Its probably easier to tinker with songs in his home studio while living a handsome lifestyle from his royalties.
It is impossible for any of us to relate to somebody in his position. The rules that govern the majority of our lives simply do not apply to him. So at the end of the day, I'd tell you he's being a wuss and squandering and he'd tell you its his strategy to survive.
I don't get it and I never will but then again why would I? Its 8:15am, I'm in the office and I have to do the boring shit to pay my massive mortgage. Axl could buy out my life debts with his personal fee from one live gig. That kind of power can do strange things to a person. And in this case, it did.
Re: Does Talent create responsibility to use that talent?
I believe any artist just has to follow their heart and be true to themselves.
But its not black and white, Axl started playing a different game when he broke up GNR, asked his friends and bandmates in their extremely successful band to become his employees in a new GNR and took multi-million dollar advances from his record company to make new music. Since then he has had responsibilities and obligations that the artist mulling their life away in the shadows doesnt have.
