Re: 20 Seconds of the new Slash Song "You're A Lie" from Apocalyptic Lov
Bono wrote:Argueing over a 20 second clip is fucking stupid.
I'll say this. Yes it sounds modern rockish and it still sounds fairly aggressive to me. I can totally picture a killer guitar solo coming out of that chorus at some point. The vocals sound good enough to me(didn't pay much attention to the lyrics). In my opinion the clip does nothing to lessen my anticipation for this album. I'm not sure how some can write it off as "garbage modern rock", that's their choice though. Also I'm not sure how anyone could claim it to be amazing either. It's 20 fucking seconds.
One thing D "might" be right about though... if it was 20 seconds of a new GN'R song, we'd need a Wal-Mart bath section full of towels to clean up all the cum all over the place.
Yeah, for some people the intro "The General" sounds "very promsinig". What the hell? It's Chris Pitman masturbatin' on some random notes. Ridiculous.
BTW I'm all for those who did write off the whole new Slash album based on 20 seconds. They should call Rolling Stone and surely get a job as a music critic. Imagine... they could judge 180 albums in an hour! Imressive.
I don't hear any Whitesnake there though. It's Slash playing some AFDish/ACDC style rhythm guitar and Myles Kennedy singing like himself, in a bit more classic rockish way than he does in Alter Bridge. The sound is a bit too pure for me, but it was the same with his previous album, so I'm not surprised.
Re: 20 Seconds of the new Slash Song "You're A Lie" from Apocalyptic Lov
no, they hate Myles so automatically say it sucks based on Myles vocal.. they aren't even hearing the cool guitar stuff in the background.
It isnt bashing if it is true.
Well, in their defense, if they truly hate Myles it would be tough for them to like the song(s). I am no fan of Nicole Scherzinger as a singer, so I LOATHE that "Baby Can't Drive" song. I don't care what Slash did on that song, I will never listen to it again.
I thought Slash's guitar work was the best part of his last record, but some of the songs fell flat because I couldn't get into the lyrics, vocals, etc.
And for the record, on the "if this was a GNR song snippet" topic, it took me quite awhile to warm up to most of the CD songs. I can honestly say I never had the blown away feeling for any of those songs initially that D has for this song. After a few listens to ENTIRE songs, yes. But not after 20 seconds.
Oh, and "Checkmate" puts this snippet to shame. Sorry, couldn't resist.
Re: 20 Seconds of the new Slash Song "You're A Lie" from Apocalyptic Lov
Exactly Faldor. I liked Slash's playing on his last album, my problem was the singers, most of all Myles. And guess what? I didn't like what I heard here.
I even said I might change my mind because I can't base anything off 20 seconds. But what I heard I didn't like. The snippet I heard of The General I thought was cool. The song might end up sucking.
And I'm not following every Slash thread spewing out how much I hate his music, his singer or his setlist. D is doing that.

Slash could pull off SCOM part 2 and people on here would bitch cause he hasn't "EVOLVED"
can't win situation when people want u to fail cause u are making new music and kicking ass... and their hero is milking Nostalgia tours.
This is the most glaring, obvious, Slashite post i've seen since 2004/05.
*filed away for reference*
I don't really think so
I think people are mad Slash is pumping out records and doing things they wish Axl was.
I have a love/hate relationship with Axl. I think we as fans give him a free pass on EVERYTHING just because it is "Better" than the quiet period. so we tolerate and excuse a lot of bullshit.
Heard a funny Chris Rock standup bit the other day how he is talking about guys who want a pat on the back for doing what u are supposed to do: Go to 2:10 seconds
So people always fire back..well at least they are active.. well at least they are this n that.... Doesn't excuse the other shit they aren't doing.
Re: 20 Seconds of the new Slash Song "You're A Lie" from Apocalyptic Lov
Slash is an Indy artist at this point. He has to play the game somewhat, has to sell records or he has no career.
Unlike Axl, he is having to build a brand from scratch essentially. not easy for a non singing guitarist to build a successful career... So in order to do so, u kinda have to do some dumb shit :Grammy's,Super Bowl etc.. but look at all the exposure u get from that.
So I sometimes give Slash a pass cause he is at least out there using his own name and doing his best to be a success.. If that means he has to do some formulatic radio friendly songs here n there.. I am down with it.
I'm sure, Like the Van Halen album... u will have an entire album full of kick ass rock but a few hit type songs mixed in.
Slash has to do what he can.. i respect that.
Indy artist, what are you smoking? Guy's one of the biggest rock stars on the planet. Everybody knows who he is. He's got so much money coming in just from old royalties that he can do whatever he wants, musically and personally. Like Izzy and Duff are doing. Hell, even Steven can support a heavy habit on his afd minority share.
He sure likes to talk real, but I'm beginning to think he never really was. He participates in all this bs cause it's the easy way to support an affluent lifestyle. He's still got some flex in him musically, but the people he choose to associate with is really diluting it. I don't think he'd even listen to stuff like this song at home. It's all for building an image, collecting a check, being in the spotlight, feeling important. He's lucky he's got so much talent that he can still make some good riffs and solos, cause he really doesn't seem to be all that into it.
Axl is kinda similar, but he gets a pass for never compromising his music or whoring himself out to commericals and silly award shows.

Checkmate is a smash hit compared to this. And I'm not kidding, you can easily hear that songs potential in a few seconds. As you can with this, or rather the lack of. He could pull out the last solo in Estranged on steroids and it wouldn't make up for Myles genericness. You slash the Mona Lisa in half and it's not really art anymore.

Re: 20 Seconds of the new Slash Song "You're A Lie" from Apocalyptic Lov
I don't think it really sounds all that more radio rock than the last album. If you'd got 20 seconds of Beautiful Dangerous in advance it would have sounded just as modern.
May turn out to be a great song, or like beautiful dangerous is to me - may turn out to be a good song but not the best on the album.
I think Myles will shine on this album because most of the issues with him and the GNR fanbase come from the fact that his tone is not like Axl. So covering GNR he can sound weak. I like that he does it cos it means we get to hear modern Slash's take on jungle, civil war etc, but I grant he does not have Axl's anger and tone. However for his own music those things won't be missing, as the vocals will be constructed around his own voice.

Re: 20 Seconds of the new Slash Song "You're A Lie" from Apocalyptic Lov
The slick production is strange for Slash, it's not what I'm used to hearing from Slash. VR wasn't even slick like that.
Set Me Free & Fall To Pieces wasn't slick?
Not the production value. Not like that.
To be honest guys I think you're hearing the passage of time.
Contraband is recorded in 2004, it's 2012 now - that's 8 years of the "loudness war" and other developments in recording technology, and more importantly mixing and mastering.
If "Slither" was recorded for the first time in 2012 I guarentee you it would have that same type of drum and bass sound as you hear on this track. It's how modern rock records are mastered.
Likewise I suspect AFD would be made to pack a similar sonic punch these days. You'd have the exact same kickass songs, but the dynamic range and all that shit would be altered, the frequencies fucked with, the sounds compressed, the drums and bass sonically alchamised, and you'd end up with an album that has that modern "huge" sound like Alice in Chain's black gives way to blue does....so you'd hear like SCOM but the drums and everything wouldn't sound like 1985 they'd sound like rock stuff sounds in 2012....that's what's going on here.
I don't think Slash's actual style is different, it's just the effect of the dudes in the engineering and mastering labs.
