Re: Grammys. Anyone watch? Thoughts??
I thought Katie Perry was kinda bad, I saw her at the AMA's I think where she played a song acoustic & was phenomenal, not sure why these girls resort to big, dance productions, but I never really got that kind of 'pop'.
I actually thought the performance by Katy Perry was pretty good. I wasn't crazy about the song though, since I had never heard it before. I would've rather she stuck with E.T. I dig that tune. But it sounded like that new song of hers was aimed at Russell Brand, so I guess that was kind of ballsy. First public appearance since the divorce and she's going all out. Failed relationships always inspire.
Foo Fighters were good, but I was sort of scratching my head at the performance of "Rope" with the whole integration of the techno or whatever the hell that was. Most rock bands would get blasted for taking part in such a "uncool" performance. But they seem to be able to get away with that stuff. They also seem to be the only rock band of note that get to perform in these award shows. They're carrying the torch.

A "Deadmaus Mix" of Rope is actually on the special edition of the album.
I take for granted the guy with the flashy mouse thing on his head was Deadmaus, but I don't know for sure. Haha.

Figured I'd start a thread on it. Any thoughts on winners or performances?
Personally I liked Rhianna's solo. Thought her & Coldway was lame, and Coldplay sucked. Glad those guys are fading away like Nickelback. Cheesy Radiohead ripoffs. I did like Taylor, liked how she was impressed by the ovation she got, although I'm not sure if that was part of the routine. And the band Perry was great, covering that Rhineston Cowboy guy. Foo Fighters were good, didn't like how they played outside for their song, not sure what that was about. Nicky Minaj was awful. Personally I'm getting tired of these girls, hope they fade away if they don't change it up real soon.
"The Rhinestone Cowboy guy" is legend Glen Campbell, and yeah he did pretty good for a guy who's degrading by the minute with Alzheimer's.
If you notice he had to have a handler get him up there, and as soon as the song was done he yelled back "where do I go now?"
And I also thought it was incredibly disrespectful to have most of the audience that was under the age of 30 sitting on their ass in their phones in the middle of a live broadcast.
If Paul McCartney is on his feet, every fucking person in that building should be on their feet following his lead.

Couldn't believe the shit that was up against Foo Fighters in the "rock" category - Coldplay, Mumford & Sons, The Decemberists, Radiohead...:nervous:
At least Foo Fighters have a bit of the "fuck off" rock attitude in them, the rest of those bands sound like they're playing folk music. 
Dave Grohl's acceptance speech was brilliant too, about how music should be about you mastering your craft as a musician, not about what sounds you can correct by using a computer.
I think he inadvertently offended everyone there with what he said, but he's fucking right. There are so many so called 'artists' out there today who rely on auto-tuned vocals and computers to make their music for them.

Completely disgaree. Everyone cheered for him when he said it and everyone knew what he ment. The only people that might be offended are fucking hacks who he was talking about (Brown, Gaga, Minaj etc etc) who rely on style over substance. Everyone is getting sick of Gaga because her schtick is bullshit. Foo Fighters sell out stadiums and will continue to because they are legit. You sound as though you think he should confrm Axlin? Fact is he's got a voice right now to use and it's up to guys like Dave Grohl to call the industry on it's bullshit. EVERYONE cheered for him for a reason. They all agreed with what he said. No fucking way the Grammy's show him and the Foo Fighters the door because of that. I guarantee you the Foo Fighters will not work their way into being a niche band like Axl's Gn'R based on this type of stuff. This is in fact the type of stuff that will win them more fans, more respect and more attention not only from fans but from the industry as a whole..
The Grammy's woudln't pick somene like Bon Iver over Nikki Minaj for best new artist and then frown upon Dave Grohl for his comments. It would be a total contradiction.

I don't think Dave should conform. I could care less. I'm not much of a fan of his outside of Nirvana and his session work.
I just think Dave is gonna be left behind. This is a culture war over how music should be performed. And sadly Dave is "the old guy", the rest aren't.
They might get 'respect' from the industry, but with the changing climate of music consumption, you're gonna have an entire generation of music fans that look at Foo Fighters and that kind of music as sucking, because of the lack of computers.
When you make that statement Bono, just remember... Dave Grohl is OUR generation of music. Not the new/current/future generation.
We're a dying breed man. Dying. Axl & Bono & Eddie too.

I disagree. Rock is dead, but I think people are starting to figure out the difference between real talent and style over substance. Look at Adele. It's all about the music with her, and she is legitimately talented. Plus she has effusively praised the Civil Wars, which is about as minimalist of an act as you will find in the business. No red tape major label bullshit with them since they are an independent act. Their music is just an acoustic guitar, piano, and two amazing voices. I think they are on the verge of exploding. Their success so far has been through word of mouth and YouTube. Their live performances are stunning. No amount of cheating on the computer can replicate the beautiful vocal harmonies that they create together. I think people are waking up and realizing that most of the crap in the music industry is a waste of time.
I wish GaGa would stop wasting her talent on superficial pop music. Use just her actual voice and a piano for instance. No bullshit over the top stage antics. No cheating with ProTools. It's not necessary. Taylor Swift recently made a song with the Civil Wars for the Hunger Games soundtrack and I would argue it's by far the best thing she's ever done. Stripped down and proof that she can actually sing, despite all previous evidence to the contrary.
Adele had the Civil Wars as her opening act on tour and has called them by far the best live act she's ever seen. She said they brought her back from the brink of going into depression because they were really cool people to hang out with backstage and their performances on stage blew her away. I think with hugely popular acts like Swift and Adele leading the charge, perhaps more acts like the Civil Wars can break through. YouTube has really been a game changer IMHO. You can't fake it when all you've got is an acoustic guitar and two voices. Either you have the talent or you don't. People are starting to wake up. Ironically enough, Whitney Houston's death might be a reminder for people of what real vocal talent sounds like. It still exists out there, it's just been marginalized by a sea of computer manipulated garbage. Adele's success is proof that the public will still latch on to genuinely talented musicians.
