4 things happened which altered her career in various ways, none of them good.
Paper Planes exploding globally. She deserved success but it went to her head & she spent 2 years coasting on it.
Hooking up with a trust fund baby as Paper Planes exploded.
Before MAYA release she tried starting a public feud with GaGa which backfired. GaGa ignored her & hardcores started bailing even before the albums release.
Diplo claiming the Sri Lanka rebel thing was always an act.
She'll never recover from this.
Best she can hope for is pulling in a casual audience again with another hit or manufactured publicity stunts, which is exactly what she's trying. The hardcores are GONE. Her sites consist of a few old fans as staff members & some post paper planes fans.
Thanks for the insight James. I was very curious what was going on with her and her fanbase. She seems to be a one-hit wonder in rapid decline.

Backstage demands of the middle finger-flipping star
FEBRUARY 7--Since M.I.A.’s middle finger flashing during the Super Bowl halftime show has enraged the Parents Television Council and other delicate football fans, the easily offended may also be perturbed by some aspects of the British-born singer’s most recent concert rider.
During a world tour that ended early last year, the performer (real name: Maya Arulpragasam) required the hiring of three female extras for each show. The women had to be between 20- and 25-years-old, with the same height and body type. They needed to have stage presence and be able to “groove to the music.”
Because, M.I.A. noted, the extras would be onstage with her for the entire show, grooving away while “wearing full covered Burkas.”
That’s right, the woman who gave 111 million Americans the finger during the country’s most holy day is a fan of the full-body cloak favored by many Muslim women. And, of course, you know what that means.
The 36-year-old performer’s organic-centric dressing room requirements include the provision of a “European” cheese and cracker tray. European would include cheeses from France (and, of course, you know what that means). Compounding matters, M.I.A. demanded a “small tray of hummus and pita bread” and Italian chocolates.
She washes this foreign food down with bottles of rum, vodka, tequila, white wine, red wine, and a six-pack of Heineken. M.I.A. also demanded that concert promoters provide a bottle of absinthe, the powerful spirits famously favored by Oscar Wilde, the Irish-born writer/poet/homosexual. (3 pages)

Did any of you see the statements Madonna made slagging her on it?
Basically Madonna was very emotional during the performance and very moved with how much of a positive moment it was (especially during Like A Prayer), and basically called MIA's move pointless, teenager, and irrelevant.
Wow. Now MIA's burned a bridge with the Queen of Pop she just recorded with. Another bad move.

Madonna 'Surprised' by M.I.A. at Halftime Show

Madonna admitted she was missing in action when it came to M.I.A's hand gesture at the Super Bowl last week. The megastar said on the radio show "On Air With Ryan Seacrest," "I was really surprised. I didn't know anything about it."
The megastar's halftime show at the Super Bowl has been overshadowed by M.I.A.'s digit malfunction. Not surprisingly, the Material Girl -- who has known her share of controversy -- was still not happy about it, saying, "I understand it's punk rock and everything, but to me there was such a feeling of love and good energy and positivity, it seemed negative. It's such a teenager-irrelevant thing to do." The 53-year-old added, "There was such a feeling of love and unity there, what was the point? It was just out of place."
The show certainly got the attention of viewers on the Web, who looked up "m i a gesture" at a furious pace. Also popular: "madonna halftime show" and "madonna super bowl."
Despite the glitches —- Madonna mentioned that she had been nervous when her throne docked on stage and about turning a cartwheel -- the performance certainly seemed good practice for her upcoming world tour. But don't expect more of the same. Madge likes to mix it up. "Oh god no! I don't want to repeat myself. I never do that!"
But one thing she might do: Cry. Madonna admitted she had a moment during "Like a Prayer." "I started crying. I felt an incredible sense of warmth, love, and support. To see an entire stadium light up like candles it was…like a religious experience."
Fans will be hoping for more such moments at her upcoming world tour.
