Re: SLASH: New Album Release Date Announced
Slash songs have been hurt by terrible lyrics, that's not exactly his fault. There's songs on 'Slash' that just strke me as old guy rock that was mailed in, like Crucify The Dead. But the solo is good.
Slash is solid on the album. My biggest problem with Slash is something he stated himself: Being afraid to ask Thom Yorke to be on the album. I wish he'd take a risk and bring in people like that, instead of taking the safe route with someone like Ozzy. Saint Is A Sinner is my favorite track from the album. And Promise. I liked a lot of the music he wrote.
The singers chosen were the ones who brought the album down for me, along with the lyrics they brought. Can you imagine Robert Plant on By The Sword? Bringing in Perry Ferrell, Norah Jones would be cool. Shooter Jennings. Chester Bennington. Or hear John Bush on Nothing To Say?
I wish Myles wasn't involved, but what are you going to do? I hope there's some good music, because I have no faith in that guy. I'm open to being surprised, though.
I agree with a lot of your points. Yeah, the lyrics are often poor on 'Slash', and it can be said about his Snakepit2 or even VR (I think Snakepit 1 did well lyrics wise, and awesome music wise). For some sad and unfortunate reason, Slash doesn't really care about the lyrics - he used to praise Axl a lot back in the day, he got Dover to write decent words for 5 O'Clock, but since then he handles lyrics like a needed, but unimportant issue. (Analyzing Axl: I think those terrible lyrics and 'I don't know the words of SCOM' comments may hurt him more than anything else.)
Anyway, Myles' Starlight was one of the stronger lyrical parts of the album, so I expect better result this time.
On the 'safe singer choices' subject. I think calling Iggy, Alice, Lemmy or Ozzy wasn't a safe, but a terribly bad choice. I know that these guys (among with Plant) are his idols and friends, but this time he should have called the young and middle generaration, only. I back his choice of Andrew Stockdale, the co-work was one of the bests in years, and I'm a Wolfmother fan. I could only complain about the 'unexplored' and too retro intro riff. I agree though that Saint is a gem. He made a surprise choice with the singer and it worked. He should have done it more times.
@Slash1, you can hear the chemistry, but only a few times, like BTS, Cali, Starlight, Saint is a Sinner, Watch This, and these are the songs that turned out to be the bests. So call me a fanboy, but I have high hopes now that he has a real band and Myles, a real songwriter partner/friend.

Re: SLASH: New Album Release Date Announced
I think you guys have all been hitting on the various different issues Slash 1 had. Personally I don't listen to it anymore because of the singers.
Slash needs to be pushed to let go of the leather trousered, wife beater wearing 60 year old vocalists and embrace a more diverse and arresting selection of younger types; Mister ID made some pretty interesting suggestions there.
Imagine how far out there Slash could push himself if he was put with:
Mike Patton
Thom Yorke
Jerry Cantrell
Maynard Keenan
Phil Anselmo
Geddy Lee
David Bowie
Da Ladies
Florence (Florence and the Machine)
Adele
Norah Jones (Thanks Mister ID)

Those aren't exactly young'uns in that there list, now are they?
Awesome list though, would love to hear him work with just about all of them (except Yorke, hate his voice).

Re: SLASH: New Album Release Date Announced
A couple of highlights on the album for me are:
Slash's shredfest on Nothing To Say, possibly the speediest, thrashiest lead guitar playing we've ever heard Slash play, and I'm hoping to hell there's more like that on the new album.
Watch This, Slash gets back to some epic riffing and soloing along the lines of something like Coma, and again, I'm hoping there's stuff like that on the new album too.

Re: SLASH: New Album Release Date Announced
Other than those 4-5 tracks... you're right. The rest is a completely and utter turd.
By The Sword is so immensely overrated it's almost embarassing. Whatever song Slash fans think exist is bizarre. Slash's guitar work is entertaining, but Andrew Stockdale is fucking terrible with a capital T. Whatever Bob Dylan meets Myles Kennedy impression he's doing is fucking ear rape.
Couldn't disagree more with that dude! I'm NO stockdale fan - I can only listen to 1-2 wolfmother tracks in a row before his voice starts to annoy me. But Slash came up with the perfect song to fit his voice.
But by the Sword is great, cool guitar, great melody and lyrics, It's got a real 1970s sort of Led Zep style epic vibe to me. Stockdale isn't someone I like in general - but in this case he hits those epic high notes in the middle at just the right moment to convey the classic rock feel of the song.
Other than Axl, I can't imagine any singer out there nailing it better on that one song.

Re: SLASH: New Album Release Date Announced
I guess it depends what we all like, as with GNR one persons favs are another's skip tracks.
To me:
Ghost - love it
Crucify the Dead - skip it
Beautiful Dangerous - average
Back From Cali - love it
Promise - Skip it
By The Sword - love it
Gotten - Skip It
Doctor Alibi - Love It
Watch This - Love It
I hold On - Skip It
Nothing to Say - Love it
Starlight - Love It
Saint is a Sinner Too - Skip It
We're all going to Die - Average
Sahara - Average
Mother Maria - Skip It
Baby Can't Drive - Love it (guilty pleasure...it's a lame comedy song but Alice+Adler rock and I enjoy the way that PCD girl screams on it)
So it's not like every song is gold to me, but there's more than enough tracks I love there to make it a very valid release. Especially compared to libertad which had about 3 songs I love and 4 average ones and the rest was a skip fest to me.
One of the biggest musical crimes of all time was that Axl and Slash didn't have the mojo to work together to make the Five O'Clock album a GNR record. Axl says slash wouldn't let him contribute (guessing he wanted an album to tour and didn't want to wait the 2 years it took for UYI to be recorded or whatever) and Slash says Axl didn't care about the songs (does seem to be that Axl's interests were electronic/instrumental at the time and he wasn't into straight guitar records). They're probably both right and both wrong and both at fault. But it's a crime to history that those riffs were used as they were - as 5'Olock would have been the next AFD if Axl had been able to weave his magic into the Slash guitar genius that is already recorded there.
Re: SLASH: New Album Release Date Announced
By all accounts Axl N' Slash couldnt bare to be in the room with each other by then, no suprise nothing magical happened during that time. Things were so bad its almost 20 years later and they've still never managed to patch it up on a personal basis, thats quite telling.
Re: SLASH: New Album Release Date Announced
I really like quite a few songs from his solo album. It gets more airtime from me than any other new releases.
That said I wanna see more of this from Slash:
Easily his most emotive piece of playing since Guns IMHO. There is lots of good stuff littered throughout his solo album, but at times whilst we see glimpses of greatness he falls short with much of it for some reason.
I think the guy still has shit like Street Child and old guns stuff in him it just requires the right setting, song, vocalist to draw it out. I think he also needs to be pushed too, it seems like at times he gets lazy and is happy with something ok rather than keep working at it until it's awesome.
Sometimes I think his desire to just get it done so he can go out and tour/play overides his desire to keep working at it until its great. He can then tour, play a few new songs but also rest on the laurels of his back catalogue and fame to help carry the tour.
