I really love VR, but I never "got" american man...to me it's sort of an example of the "bad" side of VR not the good side.

To me VR is a band with some very good songs but also some sort of bland moments where it doesn't come together and this is one of them.

There's nothing in it that really stands out, it's just kind of a default VR song..should have been a B side IMHO....Catcher on the other hand has some of Axl's most interesting recent lyrics, very good vocal work (interesting backing stuff going on) and is generally an amazing song.

Debate about the 99 vs 08 versions aside...on a songwriting level...catcher destroys american man several times over to me...and I say that as a fan of both bands. But to me this is basically an A list CD song vs a C list VR track.

I guess what I mean is....American Man wouldn't even be in a list of the 30 best  riffs slash has written since leaving GNR.....meanwhile out of the 15 Axl songs we have since old GNR ended...most people rate Catcher within the Top5.

Yeah Monkey, but with Catcher.. u are singling out Axl and kind of pushing aside the shitty messy intro, the terrible guitar solos, the poor production with vocals/piano being too low....

Most people say Slash hasn't done anything since GNR are rating the vocals/lyrics and aren't listening to the music on a whole.

So if u single out Axl's lyrics etc for Catcher, u have to single out just the guitar on VR

Catcher was my favorite Demo but i can't listen to studio version. it is that bad.

Yeah, I can see on this and some other songs great guitar moments from Slash. what bugs me the most is the overall song structures. I don't know how to express it, but they don't sound "fresh", you know?
I haven't heard anything from Slash and Duff that got me the way I was gotten the first time I've heard "Better".
Some of Izzy songs get me all goosebumps even when it's hard not to imagine the Axl touch on them.
The most Slash got me was on the first Snakepit album (a few moments) and on his solo album with Gotten and By The Sword... but no goosebumps there! 16

I think Slither and Ghost blow away anything New GNR has done guitar riff wise.

I don't mind the solo on catcher, although I will say I liked the volume of the piano higher during the intro like on the demo. I remember hearing that leak and being inspired to songwrite myself again immediately. Sounded like ass cos of the quality of the leak but damn I know a good song when i hear one!

Anyway...regarding slash...I agree that for a fair comparison one does have to single out just the guitars.

I always get bashed for this, but IMO the guitars (if listened to alone) on Snakepit 1 are just as good as AFD. Songs like Soma City Ward or Dime Store Rock are musically guitar-wise easily on par if not superior to classic GNR like "My Michelle" or "It's So Easy". I'm not saying the overall song is as good as their is a tragic lack of Izzy, Duff and Axl...but Slash's parts on that album are just as good as anything else he's ever done as far as I'm concerned.

As for VR, my comments about  American Man related only to that track not VR as a whole - I don't think the song is very good but there's lots of VR songs that I think kick a serious amount of ass. Anyone who doesn't believe that needs to go look at the RAR 07 Show where the setlist was a mix of Libertad and Contraband....it's bad fucking ass.

I just mean like despite VR being cool overall,  American Man is probably one of VR's weakest songs to my taste and here it's going up against what I think is one of Axl's strongest songs in years. So to me it's kinda a miss-match.

Great post Monkey
I agree.. I think i just voted off CITR based on my Disappointment with final product.

I just hear it all the time how Slash hasn't done shit since GNR and I think people who say that are nuts. he has tons of great riffs/solos since GNR.

just as a lot of CD is overrated cause Axl's amazing vocals/lyrics/piano polish some very mediocre music.
