LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Reese Witherspoon will star in "Devil's Knot," Atom Egoyan's movie about the West Memphis Three, one of the film's producers told TheWrap on Thursday.

The Weinstein Co.'s Dimension Films has been developing the "Devil's Knot" project for years. The West Memphis Three were also the subjects of a three-part HBO documentary, "Paradise Lost."

In the new film, Witherspoon will play Pam Hobbs, the mother of three 8-year-old boys who were brutally murdered in West Memphis, Ark., in May 1993.

Hobbs had been among those who accused Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley and Jason Baldwin of committing the infamous murders. In November 2007, she said new evidence had changed her mind.

"Did I really believe it, no, not 100 percent that they did it," she told Jonesboro, Ark.-based KAIT-TV. "I didn't believe they were capable enough or smart enough to have committed the crime, cleaned the scene up and be guilty for it."

After spending 17 years in prison, Echols, Misskelley and Baldwin were released from prison in August as part of a plea deal.

Over the years, Eddie Vedder, Henry Rollins and other prominent musicians had raised money in support of the West Memphis Three, who had maintained their innocence all along.

Dimension acquired the rights to journalist Mara Leveritt's book "Devil's Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three" in 2006, and hired Scott Derrickson and Paul Harris Boardman to write the script.

Richard Saperstein, Elizabeth Fowler, Boardman and Clark Peterson will produce Dimension's movie.

That's pretty sweet. Would be a good opportunity for GN'R to get a new tune on a soundtrack too.

I must be missing something here. What's the Gn'R connection?  Or why would this particular movie be more of an opportunity for a song than some other movie?

Ahh cool. Makes sense then. Hopefully Axl doesn't botch it like he did with Black Hawk Down.  Although if it was CD material that ment a lot then it's more than likely just be a CD song Axl allows.... I don't know.

Here's the lowdown

Damien Echols (the main guy) of the West Memphis 3, is/was a HUGE GN'R fan. He stated in an interview that GN'R and Axl Rose were his favorite band/artist at the time it all went down.

He actually stated that during the whole ordeal and actually was not "up" on what happened to Guns N' Roses. He knew the whole thing had died, but no clue why.

One of the great things he looked forward to was listening to Chinese Democracy, because he still loved Axl.

What was fascinating about the whole ordeal, and I think Lofton pointed this out, was look at when Damien went down. He missed the whole down period for Guns. How he could go from them being the biggest band on the planet, to what you got in 2008. The massive disconnect for him, and yet to still have that "Gunner passion" to root for Guns N' Fuckin' Roses.

It's kinda a mindfuck as a GN'R fan to think about.

When Axl found out about it, he started wearing "Free The West Memphis Three" shirts in-concert, and made a few comments live about I believe.

Even if it's fucking Estranged, I would be fucking stunned if this film is made with Damien is creative advisor, and GN'R & Metallica don't have a HEAVY prescence in the film. New or old.

Obviously the Eddie Vedder thing came years later.

You know what you be really cool? If all of these rockers that supported the West Memphis Three compose a song TOGETHER to close out the film. Like a redemption/justice theme.

I know it would be amazing to see Axl & Eddie together, with Metallica backing them, and Johnny Depp guesting on rhythm guitar.
