Drummer Matt Sorum Says Velvet Revolver Are Eyeing Potential New Singer
by: Nancy Dunham 1 hour ago
Velvet Revolver may be on hiatus, but the band is still actively searching for a new frontman, drummer Matt Sorum reveals. And even if a replacement for singer Scott Weiland, who departed in 2008, is found right away, it still may take some time to get a new record or tour going.
“Yeah, they’re at home trying out a guy right now. They’re sitting in a room looking at a singer named Jimmy Gnecco [of OURS]. So we’ll see how that goes, and then we’ve got a couple of other ideas,” he told Australia’s The Vine. “It looks like Slash is going to make another [solo] album, but I’m not sure about his touring and stuff yet. So we’ll see how that goes. But we’re all open to it and interested in trying to do something together.
The newly engaged Sorum goes on to say that he is in a good place musically right now. He credits his stint with Guns N’ Roses for opening his eyes to what he wanted.
“When I left Guns N’ Roses, I thought I was starting to lose my soul. Why did I get into this business in the first place? Because I love music, and I want to make some music,” he said. “I don’t want to sit around and get caught up in a bunch of drama. If I’m going to feel uncomfortable and spiritually not well, what’s the point? It’s like, ‘Let’s make some music, man.’

Wonder who are rehearsing with that guy. Matt is obviously away, Duff is playing as Axl's opening band, so it cannot be more than Slash and Dave.
That Gnecco guy is really good by the way, I did a little youtube research. He'd be a good fit.

The thing is...not too sure when this can happen.
Slash IS putting out Slash2 next year. Then he WILL tour. There is nothing more certain than Slash touring behind a record. So that basically wipes out the rest of the year for VR purposes.
I guess at some point Myles will need some time to go back to Alterbridge - that could then be a window to schedule VR activities around...as long as it's also compatible with what loaded is doing.
Re: Sorum Says Velvet Revolver Are Eyeing Potential New Singer
All the guys refuse to say VR is done and apparently they are still lookingf or a guy. I lean towards the idea that once they find the RIGHT guy Velvet Revolver will become the priority for all involved. Seems like the search for a singer was just going nowhere so to avoid going insane guys took a breather to do their own thing.
I still love the idea of Velvet Revolver and the potential it brings but they do need to find the right guy.

Honestly this might be a very cool fit.

Re: Sorum Says Velvet Revolver Are Eyeing Potential New Singer
I know I say it every 5 minutes but I just don't get why they can't just make these solo efforts from slash as VR albums...with myles.
I guess in VR they all need to agree on stuff and solo slash can just do what he wants. I get that...can't blame him for it.
But i do wonder if VR re-kicks off...how many cool riffs slash can pull out at once - I mean he's the man and I totally have faith that his new material will kickass... but then it's like a solo record last year, a new one this year comming, then a new VR record....there's got to be some kind of limit to how much he can do at once at the level he does it...but maybe not...maybe it's like the more active he gets the more comes to him.

Persoanlly I don't like Myles all that much. He's capable but he's nothing special. I would imagine the other guys in VR see that as well. Unless VR is gonna do something special there really is no point. I felt Scott was brought in cause he was a name but he wasn't a good fit in my opinion either. that's why for me Velvet Revolver has way more potential than what they've actually delivered. I'd like something different, something that sets them apart singer wise from the rest of the modern rock junk.
I agree with you though I wodner if Slash will hit riff writers block at some point?

Re: Sorum Says Velvet Revolver Are Eyeing Potential New Singer
Someone posted Brownstone from the Made In Stoke DVD on my fb today. After listening to it I'm A) Pissed off
Seems to be a common theme around here. I don't have an issue with it - I mean there is ZERO comparison between Axl and Myles. Axl just destroys myles on that song in every way possible...but to me that's obvious as no one can adequately sing Axl except Axl.
So the real comparison is what is Myles like covering GNR as opposed to who else might be covering GNR with slash.
Let's listen to them back:
Or hey...if you tolerated that one (Duff/Slash/Matt do make it passable)...maybe you should cop a listen to this:
The guitars on the Made in Stoke version are amongst Slash's best live performances I think...Myles sure aint Axl...but to me it's a step above Scott (who I like but who just can't sing in Axl's register) and guys like Rod Jackson who just seem to yell their way through it.

Totally agreed on scott. I like some of his songs, but he's too limited in range for VR to me, and it's just too grungy or whatever. He seemed to be holding slash back...(how about that interview where he says he listened to 2 CDs full of Slash/Izzy riffs and there was nothing worth developing on there ) and to me he's just a little derivative...have a listen to Spay on Libertad where he's trying to be Nirvana.
I agree about the potential. With the right guy they could destroy. The problem is finding him. It seemed they were keen to avoid anything that dated them as too 1980s (Thus bouncing Baz, Sammy Hagar, Mirko or whatever the guy's name from Steelheart is) and were going for a more modern sound. But then there's a serious risk with the modern guys that they just sound generic too. That's my problem with alterbridge. Myles can sing well but it's just modern radio rock sounding. (Although I liked starlight and back from cali - so the problem for me there might be the creed guys more than myles - we'll see when Slash2 comes out).
But it seems VR was crafted to be modern rock and comercially viable and not a throwback to the GNR days...which is a shame cos I think pretty much everyone wants Slash to be Slash from GNR and not anything else...
Interestingly I feel he's going back to his old style more in solo stuff...so let's hope it continues.
Here's a "what if" idea though - why didn't he do the solo record as a VR album. One way out of dilemma and to get publicity would have been to do a VR record with guest spots from all those famous singers. Basically make it exactly the same as he did - except with Duff and Matt on drums and bass and brand it as VR's first album post scott.
