Re: It's Official: DUFF'S LOADED To Open For GUNS N' ROSES
reading that stuff again just solidifies what a bullshit "interview" that was. Clearly planned and calculated by both Del and Axl. I wouldn't even be surprised if Del had a hand in articulating the answers for that so called interview. It really ranks up there as one of the most manipulating, self serving interviews I've ever read or heard.

Re: It's Official: DUFF'S LOADED To Open For GUNS N' ROSES
Well duff left gnr cuz he felt the direction that the band was going in wasnt for him...and he was killing himself so he removed himself from the situation
Yeah, it wasn't because of musical directions though. I remember Duff saying something about having a meeting with Axl (after he got sober, and was still working with GN'R) and saying that while he was getting paid a shitload to hang around, he wasn't into the way they were working and that it was like a dictatorship. He said something like "he didn't get into music for the money, so why should it be his motivating factor now?" or something like that.
Obviously Duff has made peace with Axl since then, but to then go and open for Axl's new GN'R, he is kinda supporting the dictatorship thing that made him walk away from it in the first place.
I agree with it being a bit of a cocktease too. I mean, does Duff want Loaded to become as big as GN'R were by doing this opening slot? And if so, why not just go back to GN'R and be huge again rather than trying with another band?
Oh, and I'm not trying to be negative, I do think it's in a way cool that they can do this. It just raises a lot of questions in my mind.
Re: It's Official: DUFF'S LOADED To Open For GUNS N' ROSES
in his book duff explains his departure. something along the lines of - he'd gotten clean sober & healthy & had settled down w/a new family & he says it was then axl changed to being a "night person" (tho i always thought axl was a night person).
what he meant was he couldn't conform to the recording methods & was exasperated at the lack of progress & thought it wasn't worth the hassle anymore, that Guns no longer was something he really connected with.
he doesn't make it sound like a dictatorship but rather an unworkable relationship, which is ever so slightly different.
he obv doesn't want loaded to be a stadium band. they've been round long enough for people ton know their expectations & aims.
Just read it again, i find the whole thing sad TBH.
yep
tbh all the del interviews thruout the bands history have been "manipulating, self serving interviews". what is del's hold on axl anyway? and what is his job w/guns? tour manager? Press agent?
it's sad he's the only person axl'll trust to talk to...

I agree.
When I originally read it, and put my head in my hands.
I wanted to cry.
From that point forward is when I KNEW, not thought, KNEW Axl had been brainwashed by his beggars & hangers on.
He's rock's Michael Jackson, and it's cemented with that interview. He's not "allowed" to see the world in the same tinted glasses we see it in. It's dangerous and it's tragic.

Duff may have changed his tune by the time he wrote his book, but shortly after Duff left GN'R, I read an interview with him where he mentioned the "Axl dictatorship" thing. So unless he was misquoted at the time, he definitely said it.
I'll see if I can find the article...

Found it!

"but this band was becoming a dictatorship, everything had to get done in Axl’s way or it wouldn’t get done at all. It wasn’t like that when we started out. At one point, we were offered a huge sum of money to play a concert in Germany. I thought : « I never played for money and I’m not gonna start now! ». I’ve got a house, I’m secure financially. Post-Neurotic was the worst moment of my career in Guns. I went out for dinner with Axl and I told him : « Enough is enough. This band is a dictatorship and I don’t see myself playing in those conditions. Find someone else"
