Re: Duff/Axl vs. Slash/Matt/Gilby 1994 Album
From what Lars has said, Axl was always a step ahead of the trends, like NIN and JA. He was listening to their demo tapes when no one even knew who they were.
And Slash's comment about all Axl wants to do is be on MTV and shit... Not exactly true as we've seen. But it's pretty clear as to why that line up was doomed. Along with what Axlin said, I can see Axl reading those quotes and was not only pissed, but hurt.

Re: Duff/Axl vs. Slash/Matt/Gilby 1994 Album
Yeah i think they both hurt each other.
Axl persuing directions that minimise Slash's role, and having non-professional people come in and overdub Slash's parts is probably troublesome for Slash. Not to mention by this stage he's signed away his rights to the brand name so has no security. And he's never understood why Axl has to come on late, has angry outburts and so on.
Then Slash chooses to respond by taking his riffs elsewhere and complaining to the media, both of which alienate Axl further.
Ends up they're in the same room and can't look at each other. There's an interview where slash describes the day he quit and it's because the night before Axl wasn't able to look him in the eye and he just couldnt deal with it anymore.
And it's both of them misunderstanding the other that drove them to that place.
Re: Duff/Axl vs. Slash/Matt/Gilby 1994 Album
Interesting comments on Gilby's departure which normally goes completely to Axl -
"And so, I told Gilby that that was going on. So he didn't hear it from somewhere else. Because if you know, in this business, leaks are like crazy. And it's just best to be upfront and honest about thing. So I told him what was going on. Then he had words with Axl and then in turn he had words with Duff. And that sort of cemented the, you know, the relationship, the departure. Whatever you wanna call it." - Slash, 1995
"He's a great guy. But I don't know if he was the good guy to write the new album with us. We did some songs together, but Axl thought it was not good enough." - Matt, 1996
Some more comments on Duff's relationship with Axl at different points -
"Duff: We progress naturally. As far as the rumor that one person wants us to change, that's just not true" - Duff 1996
"Duff, being asked if he is still friends with Axl in 1999: Yes I am, but it doesn’t mean we agree on everything. We’ve been thinking too much about this band. We’ve been teenagers together, we became adults together. Nobody can ask me not to be friend anymore with my brother. But he’s got a problem: too many people around him confusing his mind. To be honest, he probably doesn’t live in the same world as you and me" - Duff - 1999
"Duff: Not too long after I got out of the hospital, Axl came up to Seattle to visit me. The challenge was how we were going to make a new record and what direction we were going to go musically. We couldn't very well do anything at the time because Slash was out doing a Snakepit tour and battling his own addiction. In previous years, there had seemed to be a fail-proof alliance and understanding within our band; we knew that at the end of the day we only had each other to rely on. Now I was doing sober things with Axl, like riding mountain bikes and eating healthy food and talking on the phone about a productive musical direction. That sense of family and trust had recently been tainted by management dealings and other wedges that did everything possible to vanquish our bonds" - Duff, 2009
"Duff: What I do regret is we let down a huge fan base that was there waiting for a next record, and Axl made us all--we all balled at one point or another. We couldn't deal with him. There wasn't any sort of rationality. It's just too bad. God, I don't want to come off bad mouthing him because the guy has a lot of great attributes. But how it worked before was the band would write all the music and rehearse it all, and kind of give it to Axl and he'd write lyrics to it. Or Izzy or I would already have lyrics, and he would just come in at the end. Later he wanted to be the ringleader and it didn't go anywhere. And I guess it still hasn't. Whatever, I have no resentment" - Duff, 2005
Re: Duff/Axl vs. Slash/Matt/Gilby 1994 Album
"At one point he said he was gonna a solo project, then he decided his solo-project he could do with Guns, which I was like, after doing all those videos and this and that and the other, I was like: "No". [laughs] No, I don't wanna get involved in any kind of Stephanie Seymour ballads or any of that shit." (Slash, Canadian Radio, 04/20/95)
Thanks to sic.
So pretty much if Axl wanted to do a "November Rain", "Estranged", "Street Of Dreams", "This I Love", "There Was a Time" or a "Paitence" ect. back then.
Slash would have passed?
Re: Duff/Axl vs. Slash/Matt/Gilby 1994 Album
Definitely. The more stuff i've read of Slash from that period, there was a HUGE resentment he had directly of Axl for nothing else other than doing those kind of, what we know today as "Axl ballads".
Slash hated it, and was gonna put up resistence at every corner, so much that he went to the press to slag Axl for "that shit" (which he called it numerous times), which was everything Axl was about as an artist.
Slash forgets that stuff. I don't blame Axl feeling incredibly hurt by it.
In some ways I wonder had Slash never quit, and Axl never fired him, we would've probably never seen another GN'R album period. Axl hated what Slash was doing (deservedly) and Slash hated what Axl was doing.
Makes reunions seem like a pipe dream and it's a total shame. Slash would sound AMAZING on songs like TIL, TWAT & SOD.

Re: Duff/Axl vs. Slash/Matt/Gilby 1994 Album
If Axl was willing to do a 70/30 split of Rockers to Ballads, Slash would have been fine. But, I think Axl was working as if he was going to do an album of 80/20 Ballads to Rockers... Lets see what Slash and Myles come up with.
Re: Duff/Axl vs. Slash/Matt/Gilby 1994 Album
I don't think Axl was working that way at all. I think Axl wanted to do like he did with CD.
50/50. Rockers and ballads. Even that was too much to Slash. I think he was of the opinion that rock albums should only have 1-2 ballads, ala AFD.

Re: Duff/Axl vs. Slash/Matt/Gilby 1994 Album
CD:
Madagascar
Blues (street of dreams)
TIL
SORRY
Cather in the Rye
If The World
Prostitute
TWAT
None of those are "rockers"...
Better, CD, Shacklers, Scraped, Riad?
Re: Duff/Axl vs. Slash/Matt/Gilby 1994 Album
I consider "Sorry" a rocker. Maybe it's just me.
50/50 sounds about right.
