Re: That Metal Show, Trunk/GN'R Discussion
While the Metal Show interview wasn't a great one, I definitely thought that it was a fun one. It was good to see Axl taking part in something like that after all these years. As much as certain parts annoyed some of the diehards, I'm sure it more than made up for it by repairing his image with some of the casuals. As everyone's already said, Axl came across pretty likable. So you've got to think about the big picture.
You make some good points. I was thinking something similar about how things like this are great PR for Axl and if he can do more of them they certainly could go a long way towards repairing his image.
Yes the interviewers came accross as muppets, but importantly Axl came accross looking like a good guy, funny, interesting and prepared to talk. I know he seems to hate doing interviews in the past but IMO he should get out and do a few more on this tour whilst he's on a roll. It can only be potentially positive for him, I mean he gets bashed now as it is in the press, so whats the worse case scenario if an interview goes bad, they continue to dish up what he currently gets. So what! But the potential upside if it goes well.....
Re: That Metal Show, Trunk/GN'R Discussion
They ended their coverage by playing the clip where Axl was talking about the album doing well. Drew started to talk over Axl's answer saying "Yeah right, the album did well... it's terrible. Well, I haven't heard it myself but I'm sure it's just awful" then they talked a little bit more about how full of himself Axl is and the show ended soon after that.
yeah and they kissed his ass when he was on their show in 2002, i bet that slipped their minds though

Does kinda rub u the wrong way he mentions stopping the late starts cause of the Crew.... Why not stop them cause of the hardworking people paying huge prices to see u and that have to work the next day?
That's the first thing I said. Yea, you're being hard on the crew...big fucking deal, that's their job! People put down their money to see a show, try not being late for them.
And the "Something always goes wrong"...yea for every single concert. But then turns around and essentially says he's always run late his entire life.

So he must have the worst crew ever assembled if things mess up every single show. Just be honest and say u start late cause u prefer playing later.

His voice sounded weak during the versus of LALD, but, during the chorus and screams, sounded good.
Nah that wasn't it... Axl just was weak. Simple as that.
Can't remember what I texted Russ during Orlando, but I told him live in real time that LALD was sounding like 2002, and YCBM sounded terrible, Axl of course. Then you'd have a situation where the band fucked up NR, but Axl was on. Moments like that happened.
For the most part Axl's rasp was ACTUALLY there, and he sounded awesome. The YouTube videos proved that. But there were other songs he sounded weaker on, and the TMS pro-shot shit proves that.
Has nothing to do with "great mix". 'Cause I could hear Axl 2002'ing it at times, with the mix live.
Bottom line:
Axl can't sing LALD anymore
Axl CERTAINTLY cannot sing YCBM anymore (I haven't heard a good version of this YET on the 2011 tour)
Axl sings SCOM with a clean, crisp, no rasp ala 2002Sometimes during the outro Axl will slip into 2006-isms on SCOM, and some raspy moments will return, but for the most part Axl sings SCOM like a 2002 CD song. Some people like that. I don't, but Axl wasn't pitchy on it either.
Either way, I don't think it's about the mix. More like "bad" or "biased" ears. Some songs Axl just doesn't have it anymore. I LOVE You Could Be Mine. LOVE IT. The song was MY FIRST Guns N' Roses song. It broke me into the band. I will always love it for that. Always.
But Axl needs to drop it if he can't do it right anymore. Seems to take alot out of him. Obviously it's one of Axl's favorites, and big with the audience, plus it's one of the few UYI trx in the set. It ain't going anywhere.
Shackler's, Miami 2011 was another one where Axl was full blown 2002, struggling. I wonder if that "Tell Frank, no one asked" comment came from. Axl did Shackler's by request of the band, but he didn't feel like he was vocally prepared for it. It showed.
I think the Miami version of "Shackler's Revenge" was the best I've ever heard.
I think Axl intentionally pulled back on his volume during the verses of LALD, and I think it's a smart move to pace himself during a marathon show. His vocal tone was great, and I loved the vibrato he used. I'll never understand how people think singing with a raspy tone is actually good, especially live. I think the cleaner tone both sounds better and is better for his voice, especially if he's concentrating keeping his throat open to do that.

The rasp to me gives his voice balls and attitude. No rasp in singing is quite alright, but for balls out rock, its almost a must.

On the one hand, he could care more about the crew's safety than the fans because he's seeing it firsthand. He sees those guys everyday, while he sees the fans ONCE and that's it.
With that being said, I agree with you both that his answers to that question were mostly a bunch of BS until he finally admitted that he's just a "late" kind of guy. That was a funny and honest answer, should've just stuck with that one. I mean, I'm sure on occasions things go wrong on the day of shows that lead to delays, but I have a hard time believing EVERY show that happens.

I think he was just saying it's uncanny that even when he tries to be on time (which probably isn't all the time lol) something tends to screw with him and cause it to go late anyway.
I imagine Axl would be keen to make everything right on show day and his attention to details could be a little on the OCD side...and probably results in delays too.
