Re: Could the tide be turning
I don't see it as not good enough...I see it as DIFFERENT.
The problem to me is essentially that in the absence of serious promotion and branding activities - the end product must resemble what the public is familiar with in terms of the brand name - and that's an AFD/UYI era sound. The ballads do - the rockers do not.
Or otherwise launch a new GNR as a new sound. Like a new forumula coke or some other brand that reinvented itself - maybe like Apple did a few years back. But that needs branding - serious promotion - the consumers need to know why things are like they are, what the aim of it was - what the benifits are - what it looks like - what it means if they buy it.
So like you'd need interviews from Axl and the whole band about the album and the process, more about the meanings of the songs, if things are an artistic statement - more visability - posters, videos, public apperances, interviews - stuff like that. Thats the supporting cast of a radical brand reinvention.
Problem is GNR doesnt have those things or doesn't want to do those things. Which is fine in it's own way - but from a marketing perspective makes it hard to choose a single - as the rockers are great but not what the public expects - and it's hard to change that expectation without the actions listed above.
Re: Could the tide be turning
when is the last time that anything, other than sweet child o' mine itself, sounded remotely like sweet child and charted well?......
never
whether it is the best single or not, like axlin said way back in another thread, the public likes what it is told to like - what is pushed and promoted.
had it been released right after cd song with a video it might have done much better and the album may not have dropped at that point.
the question/s then is:
was better the right second single?
or was this a coincidence and the drop was a residual effect and it was cd that was a bad first single?
were they both bad singles?
personally, i think they should have first released twat or catcher - which sound more like the gnr people grew up to.
if you are trying to reinvent your sound then you release something that sounds more modern.
CD was a bad first single. I'd compare it to Get on Your Boots by U2. Terrible choice. Had U2 released Magnificent as their lead single NLOTH would've been a much bigger success. I think had Better been the lead it woudl've worked much better.
Having said all that Sorry should've been the first single off CD although you run the risk of it being maybe too slow. The lyrics though would've have fueld fire and interest as it's easy to directly link them to Slash or the old band. It's got the most "modern Rock" feel of any song off CD and it doesn't have a weird new Axl voice on it. It's got his classic baratone voice as well as his classic raspy voice.
There Was a Time would have sucked as a lead single. It's way too long and it would bore listeners and honestly at points in that song it would simply annoy a lot of people.
Prostitute may have worked.
A BIG FAT NO TO:
IRS, Madagascar, Shacklers, Riads, The BLues ITW, TIL, Catcher

Oh piss off with that shit.

No way in hell to even know that.
i see how it is:
your example is just fine when based on you and your friend
mine and russ's is no good, although based on reviews and many more fans, because there is no way to validate it... and i'm to piss off.
did i get that right?
Listen there is no way to tell if the majority of people who actually heard CD were favoarable to it. You can list examples and say some people were favorable to it but you CAN'T say the majority of people were as though it was a fact cause there is no way to know it because we don't know how many actually even heard it. I said if I know of people who went about purchasing CD a certain way then there must be more out there who did it a similar way. I followed it up by saying I purchse albums that way often yet to you that's hilarious and I'm basing every sale off this. To you it's ridiculous becaussd it' flys in the face of a theory that russtcb and others have come up with to glorify the band. Did I say all people bought it that way? No I said a lot probably did. I'm not dellusional like people like russtcb who think everyone who bought or didn't buy CD took the time to stream the album first
the vast majority of people who bought the album likely didn't even know it was streaming on their myspace page. Too many of you seem to think anyone who buys an album by any band are always hardcore fans who know everything about everything regarding said band.
And for the record if you can't comprehend when someone is listing an example of something that they've actually seen and then feel the need to mock it or try to dismiss it as bullshit then yes you should piss off.
Re: Could the tide be turning
Opening CD with a TWAT video as the lead single with Buckethead's solo would have blown people away.
No it woudln't because the average Joe wouldn't see the Buckethead solo the way hardcore fans on these message boards do. I like Buckethead and even I don't see what's so great about the TWAT solo. the song is too long for a lead single and it would bore radio listeners. In 2008 music videos wouldn't have the impact it used to anyways. It would not be Slash walking outta the chruch or rising up outta the water all over again. TWAT as a lead single woudl've been so much worse than CD
Re: Could the tide be turning
You don't have to be a hardcore fan to know how to use the internet as the majority of people do.
Again, if you knew about CD, enough to want to hear it, and you actually have a computer and frequent the internet, which is probably how they heard about CD in the first place, then you would know it was being streamed. Nearly every article gave a link to the stream back then when it came out. If you typed GN'R or Chinese Democracy in a search engine, the results would take you to their myspace page with the header "listen to the entire album here."

Completely and totally agree.
It doesn't fuckin' matter how long it is. THAT WAS AXL'S BIG GUN.
He HAD TO come out of the gate with THAT. Any less, and you get what you had year this time 3 years ago.

Wow. Some of you are so out of touch. MOST people probably heard about it via radio talk. And if they heard about it on internet they are likley hardcore fans searching for Gn'R related news. Some of you are acting like regular joes don't buy music. Some of you are acting liek everyone who bought the fucking album needed to research it beforhand. Not everyone on thsi planet who buys music researches it first. To think so is asinine. Your'e going off the theory that everyone who wanted to hear CD went about searching about it on the internet. Did it ever occur to you or anyone else that a lot fo people likley just heard about on radio and one day happend to notice it in the new release section and though oh yeah cool I'll buy that it's only $11.99
Only in the USA was it a best buy exclusive. You could buy it ANYWHERE in Canada so how many people do you think bought it on impulse? Probably a lot. Is that how all the sales went? No. But at least i don't act as though everyone who wanetd to hear CD did a full scale reserach project on it first.
