I fucking love that song.  I said it before and I'll say it again, it's reminiscent of "Don't Damn Me" for me, and it feels like an evolution of that type of song.  I love the song.  I love it slightly less than "Don't Damn Me".

I didn't say anything about it sounding like "Don't Damn Me".  It reminds me of that song in terms of it's feel and attitude.

I dunno...I think the better nay-sayers are forgetting how exciting it was to hear that leak....sure the song structure is modern and bizzare...but when Axl kicks in on the verse he sounds like Axl...and that's not to be discounted.

It's got some fun shred in the middle, nice and heavy, and ends with the bluesy outro that can keep slash fans at bay. It's kinda a good all rounder....although I'll grant the masturbating robots are not for the feint harted.

Twat would be awesome as it's my favourite on the album - and basicly that middle "I would do anything for you" part is so damn epic that i'd forgive any amount of late starts or gnr drama for it...but I'm not sure it translates so well as a single...it takes a long time to get going...and the start is a little wierd with the way the loops, buckets playing and Axl's bit go together.

And it's WAY too long for any radio...although I'll grant it would have been cool with some kind of modern version of a NR clip...but that would be pricey!

The Better single should've and would've gained 'massive steam' but it wasn't promoted by anyone at all.

When is the last time anything that sounded remotely like Better charted well?  I even liked the less cluttered leak versions of the song, but it was never going to drive anything.

If promoted properly, it would've driven sales.

And the "when's the last time..." question is irrelevant. When "Teen Spirit" hit, I'm sure Geffen wasn't like "When's the last time something like this blew up?"

So you're comparing a 50 year old has-been to a new (to the general public) up and coming band?  CD could have been the greatest album in the history of the universe and it wouldn't have been viewed the same as Smells Like Teen Spirit.

IRS is terrible.  Lyrics blow.  If CD could have possibly sold worse than it did, releasing IRS as the lead single would have done it.

Shotgun Blues is great

IRS has good lyrics, but it immediately for those once interested answers some questions as to where axl disappeared to
decent song. poppier & more immediate than most of CD. concise w/o the kitchen sink effect of Better/CD/SOD
clear choice
if only they'd cared.. oh well i think it's better this way tbpfh.

Yeah I love Shotgun Blues...never understand why people don't!

SOD or TIL is pretty close to old GNR ballad sounds...can imagine those getting some traction as much as any ballad does these days....I think the problem was the rocker tracks on CD are really outside of the old formulas (eg Riad..cool song but people would be like WTF if they're expecting Mr Brownstone)

TIL'd have been a xmas time single, the NEXT yr had CD taken off (& they'd toured the USA first)

TWAT'd only have been 3rd r 4th single prob

that rockers point is largely correct & was touched upon briefly in the myspace stream discussion recently (or, whenever the myspace thing is mentioned) the drop off in listeners having SR as 2nd track. the rockers do alienate people/fans - & understandably so as by&large the rockers aren't good enough.
