Re: Could the tide be turning
Your patriotism is very nice, buzz. But still...
Even though the facts are it sold 600,000 in the US, 3 million around the world and had excellent reviews and that's without any great promotion or coinciding tour. Those are facts not opinions.
That's reality. You know, the thing you seem to be ignoring.
Yep. How many sold after the second week? How many sold when they were $1.99? That's reality. You know, the thing you're always ignoring.
Re: Could the tide be turning
guarantee less than 50,000 sold at the 1.99 price....guarantee. I am also quite sure that the sales are closer to 700,000 than 600,000. But, that was due to the 1.99 deal.
The sales tapered off quickly after about a month. I tracked them. It sold decent through Christmas and then fell off the shelf in early January 2009. That is reality.

I've yet to see one fact based statement on why the record company would want to release a new album. I don't hear them begging for it. i don't see them mentioning it. I didn't see them promote the last one. they got their money back, and THAT is the ONLY reason CD was allowed to be released in the first place. There will be no best buy this time around.
I haven't seen you, or others, make any fact based statements as to why the record company wouldn't put out another album either. You're also making your own assumptions. I've never heard Universal SAY they wouldn't support another GNR release, just like you've never heard them say they would. So we seem to be even there.
And I'll ask again. How many ROCK records have sold as well, if not better than CD since its release? I'm pretty sure the answer is, not many. So for that alone, I could certainly see a reason for the record company to give it a go. Especially if they could do it in a fiscally responsible manner and without all the headaches. Of course, therein lies the problem, as money and headaches were two MAJOR issues last time around.
Arguments can be made on both sides of the argument and NONE of us are right or wrong until proven otherwise. And even then, people will spin things a certain way to make it look like they were right all along.
Again, what in the world would make you think a second album would sell as much as CD did? All the sales they made after the first couple weeks? Come on - best buy couldn't give them away.

Yes, it is. For some reason, people seem to think that a new album is going to just fly off the shelves. I'm not quite sure what they are basing it on, but there's no logical reason to believe that. It could happen. There's no reason to expect it.

It would fly off the shelf if they only press 100,000 copies.

I think it would sell the same. There are still a decent amount of Axl lunatics out there who will purchase it regardless of the quality.

It's a factual that Chinese Democracy's sales figures were stronger than a lot of rock albums whose artists were not dumped by their labels.
Sure...Best Buy may have over estimated demand and dumped their remaining stock 3 years on...but even so...the labels fund a lot of rock artists whose numbers are no where near as good as Chinese. It's triple platinum worldwide. Show me a record label who doesn't want those sales.
It's cool that you have national pride buzz, but large corporations do not share your sense of isolationism. I'm sure Universal is happy to accept cash rolling in in any old currency be it Euros or US dollars.
It's a fact that the GNR brand name still has significant value. Even without the rest of the band and the other issues it's a marque brand name.
It's a fact that labels exist mostly to make money.
No one says you have to like the album or new GNR...but this idea you are pressing that no label would have any interest in a new release from them - just doesn't add up - especially given there's a potential release that's 3/4 complete and already in the black sitting on an HDD somewhere.
