Re: Never mind Nevermind, 1991 was all about Guns N' Roses
Nirvana blew up first in the US and PJ hit right after.....
This could explain the difference in perspectives. I don't say this to thump my Canadian chest but I've always felt Canada is ahead of the US when it comes to recognizing, appreciating and embracing rock music. Clearly the best rock bands are American but Canada as a whole has always seemd to embrace new rock music first. Pearl Jam broke here in Alberta, Canada WAY before Nirvana did. Way before. And it's weird that Nirvana's follow up to Nevermind didn't even register here wheras everyone was anticipating Vs from Pearl Jam.
Pearl Jam, when Even Flow and Alive came out, pretty much came across as the pretty boys of the Seattle group. That's seriously not a knock against them. But their album was more polished than AI, SG and Nirvana's were. They were better looking than the other groups. The music was much more pop friendly than the others. They weren't as dark or aggressive, where as Nirvana was really the grungy, rawer sounding, smells bad, unpolished of the group, which is why they probably get looked at as the real deal, fair or not.
And I always got the feeling that that was the reason PJ pulled away from the spotlight, wouldn't do videos and became a much more rawer sounding band, because of how they came across back then. Even going back and remixing TEN, because they didn't like how polished it was. And the remixes I heard were very cool, btw. But I think that goes to show how conscious they were about it, to revisit that album so many years later when it was such a seminal record for them. It's almost like they were embarrassed by it, or it represented something negative to them. Okay, flame away
I'm not gonna flame away but Iprobably coudl not disgaree more with what you've jsut said. Pearl Jam remixed Ten as a marketing tool. A remix of their breakout album will sell more than a simple reissue. Also I don't think anything could sound any more polished than Nevermind. Listen to Bleach and then listen to Nevermind. It's the epitomy of a polished album. Also to say Jeremy and Alive and Even Flow are more pop than SLTS or Come as You Are or Lithium.... I don't see it. In fact Nirvana's songs on Nevemind in my opinion have a much more pop structure than anything off of Ten. melody wise definitely. Pearl Jam's Ten had a dark brooding sound to it. Songs like Release and Black and then aggressive songs like Porch and Why Go are as aggressive as anything on Nevermind.
I honestly belived Pearl Jam pulled away from the spotlight because Eddie Vedder was everything Kurt Cobain claimed to be. Cobain was a fraud in the sense that he continueally bashed bands "seeking the spotlight" yet that's all the guy did. Like you said he manipulated the media. he wasn't the person he claimed to be and if he was he sure didn't walk the walk. Eddie Vedder walked Cobain's talk which many people seemd to ignore.
Re: Never mind Nevermind, 1991 was all about Guns N' Roses
Vedder is still doing it too...solo albums and tours...PJ stuff. Out of all those rockers from the early nineties, he's done the best at being successful while maintaining his credibility as an artist. I don't listen to all his stuff, but I respect him.

Bono, I have a different view of it, but this is a good debate, man.
And it may not have shown, but I'm actually a HUGE Pearl Jam fan
I love this Eddie Vedder song:

Shitvana is the most overrated band in the history of Rock. PJ had some real talent, like I said, a classic rock band with an alternative singer. But Nirvana was a fucking joke. Dave Grohl is the man, and a badass drummer, but besides that, anyone on this board could play that boring ass shit. They were way more image than substance. They hardly get ANY radio play anymore, especially in comparison to GNR. GNR's songs HAVE and WILL forever stand the test of time. Nirvana already sounds SOOOO dated.
Re: Never mind Nevermind, 1991 was all about Guns N' Roses
Of the early 90's new wave of bands that came Eddie Vedder is definitly the man in my opinion. Like Madagas said he's maintained unreal success without compromising his integrity in any way as far as an artist goes. In my opinion Eddie Vedder is a living legend and living legends are more often than not under appreciated.
I won't ever deny Nirvana's unplugged was a pretty special thing and as an overall performance probably better than Pearl Jam's but as a one off, one song performance this one blew every other unplugged performance outta the water back then in my opinion. Eddie's voice is just fucking awesome.

Detroit has some good rock stations... Down south, nobody gives a flying fuck about Nirvana anymore.. Our rock station here is lame, they play nothing but Nickleback, AX7, Stained, Godsmack, Metallica, some GNR, some AC/DC, some led zep, green day etc. The Classic rock Station plays some RHCP, GNR, AC/DC, Skynyrd, typical shit. You hear some Nirvana, but not too much. More PJ. I hear CD once every 4 months or so.

Always interesting to hear peoples musical experiences from around the world. It's why I love this site. But it kills me to see people ripping on Nirvana. Nevermind is an alltime great album with a slew of classics. In Bloom is still one of my favorite songs. And when Nirvana caught on, the cultural change seemed to happen in a day, less than a day even! The Warrants of the world immediately became a joke, and people started dressing different, wearing their hair different, everything became different where I lived.
But the difference between Nevermind's blowup & AFD blowup is that Nevermind was more just for young people(teen angst), were as AFD literally had my mom blasting SCOM. To me, Nevermind is the most culturally significant album since I started listening to music, as it changed the world I knew more than any other piece of music I've have ever heard. I'll never downplay Nirvana's importance or slag on thier music, both were epic. IMO, Nirvana definitely deserves their praise.
