I was watching the poll pretty closely when it was first released and it appeared that it was hacked by a RHCP voting bot at first. Damn thing was going up by one vote per second for something like 8 hours straight. It has slowed down considerably. Then there was a huge surge by the Cure which looked suspicious as hell too. That one has also slowed down. The only steady one seems to be GN'R. More casual fans out there, no rigging needed.

Think there's an underestimation at how popular RHCP's are. They appeal to music fans, not just rock music fans. Anything album post "Calfornication" and "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" got massive air play and still does... in the UK.
"The Cure" and "Beastie Boys", neither of which I'm a massive fan of probably get in eventually at least on "influence".
