I have a curious question for all the rock/metal and even regular music enthusiasts out there...

What's wrong with melodic rock, also known as power rock, glam metal, and most commonly hair metal?

And I mean more than "it sucks". If you don't like it, you don't like it.

But i'm just curious where the origin and the point to "fuck that" on that kind of music began, and why it remains to this day. I'm specifically looking at the grunge crowd who were almost a counter culture to the whole scene

Was it because it was jock rock?

Is it image?

Is it because you're sister dug it?

I'm just curious. Because although like all genres there are good and bad bands, I hear quite a bit of it with fantastic production values, slick sound, and great melodies. The biggest drawback is it's repetitive... but guess what... so is grunge.

So for all the music enthusiasts, if you like it, tell me why, if you don't (and I KNOW there are MANY on here), give me some exact reasons please as to why, because nobody has ever been able to pinpoint it for me.

Thx in advance for any replies

I think the hate stems from because the guys were starting to look like chicks, wearing makeup and all that stuff...

You can have long hair and not look like a lady, but for some of those hair bands, it was hard to distinguish.

As with any genre, I think the best of the genre exhibit a lot of talent, while the imitators are pathetic and far outweigh the real skilled folks.

The problem was also that the style has distinctive qualities, making it easy to copy if you are a hack (very hard to copy well) - but  to the general public it becomes lost and they just see the hack side of it.

Take rap. There's a lot of talent to creatre truely good rap. There's clever use of words, rhythms and speach patterns, levels of meaning, interesting use of beats and backing tracks. Some of the most talented did these things - but also had distinctive styles - ways of talking - body language. Now what happens is the less talented members imitate the dress sence, the way of talking and the idea..but with much less skill.

I think it's the same for metal. There's a lot of talent in true melodic hard rock music. But just growing out big hair and wearing those clothes doesn't make you talented. Some people can scream in a high voice and convey a depth of emotion and the human experience...others just sound like they've lost their balls....lol....it's kinda a case of the imitators ruining it for everyone.

I feel the same about most genres. The original grunge bands were fun too...the clone bands not so much.

Bottom line - i think the community hates it cos it's an easy target - like picking on someone with red hair or being overweight or whatever. Easy laughs for the majority at the expense of the few.

And I feel the same way about grunge, even though I identify with it more than melodic. Obviously someone doesn't want to listen to songs about how much life sucks and how much "it's time to die" every day, and otherwise you'll wrap your mouth around a nice Cobain on rye.

To me stuff like this is GOOD:

Hurricane - Over The Edge (pre-Foreigner lead singer Kelly Hansen tried out for Slash's Snakepit)

Lion - Never Surrender (feat. pre-Whitesnake Doug Aldrich on guitar)

H.E.A.T - Keep On Dreaming

KISS - Trial By Fire

Poison - Something To Believe In

Warrant - Bitter Pill

Slaughter - Fly To The Angels
