Actually, I am gonna tell u why I disagree.
I say this all the time.
Reason that I do care and why GNR fans SHOULD care, is because we do in fact love this band.
So, we need to care about how they conduct business, how much success they have and just in general how well they do. Cause if the tours don't go well, we may NEVER get anymore music and possibly no more tours. Remember the quiet periods when we heard nothing? Do we want that again?
So I think as a fan, u have to be concerned about more than just having fun and its just music, cause our stake in the band, depends on way more than just us having a good time.
Also, I've always had a lot of Pride in the bands I love. It makes me feel good when I see Bon Jovi beating Lady Gaga for highest grossing tour. Makes me feel great when Prince wins Grammys or Slash wins a best guitarist or Axl wins best vocalist. I don't want GNR to be associated with being a joke. that bothers me. bands are like sport teams to me. I care bout how they do.

its not that i dont care how they do, but they are gonna do what they are gonna do...and not a damn thing you or i or anyone thinks or says is gonna change it
my stance is why get worked up about shit that i have no control over....i got enough to fuckign handle without stressing over GnR...doestn mean i dont want them to succeed or whatever....its just ...i dunno how to say it...it is what it is and its gonna happen how it happens...enjoy what you can in little bits here and there or as a whole...and dont stress when things go awry? thats my philosophy wth gnr these days

Pretty much. It's a very sad place to be. So you have to be realistic, and look to the positive.
The only way to do that is you have to simplify the whole thing. You basically have given up on Axl. You almost expect him to disappoint you. So it doesn't surprise you when he does. It just makes things easier.
I don't care what anyone says, new band (I discovered them in 2001-02), all that bullshit, there's no way you can look at the 1989-91 period, and look at the band today and think "that's EXACTLY what I would've wanted!"
Even Axl would disagree with you.

Gave up on them doing new music? Not really. Just not invested in it anymore.
Gave up on following their trials n tribulations? If that were the case none of us would be here.
Gave up on seeing them live? Hell no. I'd go in a heartbeat.
Gave up on being proud of GNR?
Not really. I don't talk them up to friends but when they do something epic,such as note perfect renditions of estranged. I still get a swell of pride and think "That's my boy!"
