As I remeber, Axl felt the original version was too old and not fresh enough, so he wrote new lyrics. He said he always preferred the new version over the old, question is why they released the old as a single.

Axl, about the alternative lyrics: I don't know that it's more up-beat or anything it's just where my head's are with that song now, you know, rather than make a nostalgia piece (...) And a lot of people who liked the original and it was their favourite song, license plates that says "Don't Cry" and whatever, heard the new one and kinda flip out like "How did you do that?", I don't know (laughter). But when I was in the studio I was like, "I don't know what's happening, Mike, but just let me go with it". And it worked out really nice [Interview with Axl Rose, 1991].
Axl: While I was recording the original version I started hearing another melody and words in my head. It really surprised me. I told Mike Clink, our producer, "Put me on another track! I don't know what's happening here but I've got a different song coming through my head and I want to get that on tape" [Shadow boxing with Axl Rose, June 1992].

Think he was going to choose Coma or Locomotive? Please. Bullshit question.
Wow, I had no idea there was actually so little UYI presence in new GN'R's set lists. Only 5 of 30 songs, and only the singles.
I was quite excited when Perfect Crime was considered at one stage, and I'd still love to hear that or ANY other UYI track played.

I remember when I first got the Illusions Dont Cry was initially one of the stand out tracks, I loved it and would play it over and over - the alt version was a nice bonus.
But it was a stand out track cause much of the albums tracks were hard to grasp at first, huge songs that went on forever and songs that were miles away from AFD, Dont Cry hit the spot immediately.
Now though I find it rather dull, love the old 80's live versions much more than the album version. Not a fan of Rons version much, but I like its development from his noodling solo spot to a full band version like now.

One of the best things about Don't Cry is Slash's killer solo, and they didn't play it for a long time in Ron's solo spot, and now DJ plays a simplified version of it that doesn't really do it justice.

Slash takes all GNR tracks he plays on and makes them better, he was sensational in his day.
It's too bad he's playing as well as he ever has now, but he can't write songs at a high enough level for people to want to listen to the part of the song that he does best.

That was my huge problem with his solo album. Great guitar work, some fantastic solos, but the songs themselves are pretty shitty. The lyrics are embarrassingly terrible.
