Re: Rank the 80's bands by level they'd appear

This isn't your normal 1 through 10 list.

I think bands from every era range from great to shit with each copy cat sucking a little more from the genre till it dies.

For instance Bon Jovi would be a level 1 *top Level* whereas The Bulletboys certainly would not be Level 1.

Trick to this game is, for us to place 80's bands on each rung of the scale and debate who belongs where.

For instance Level 1 would easily be Metallica,Bon Jovi,U2,GNR etc etc etc

But take Motley Crue and Poison... Are they low level number 1's? or do they fall down to the 2nd level??

how bout bands like Warrant and Slaughter etc...

Let's say Level 1 is greatest.. Level 4 is the shittiest...  Place the bands on each one and see what we can come up with.

In my eyes:

Level 1 = greatest
Level 2 = good
Level 3 = average
Level 4 = shit

For me...

Level 1: Guns N' Roses, Metallica
Level 2: Motley Crue, U2, Skid Row
Level 3: Poison, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Warrant, Slaughter, Whitesnake
Level 4: Mr. Big, Trixter, Firehouse, Winger

In fairness, I completely understand you are a Bon Jovi diehard, and I totally respect that.

I've just never been big on them. They've got a few great singles, and I probably enjoyed their debut album the most, 'cause the sound on that album appealed to my tastes the most.

But I thought Slippery When Wet was enormously overrated. Every song on the album is a hit, but it all kind of sounds the same to me (AC/DC is the same way, so this isn't meant as a slag on Jovi).

I think for me, I wasn't music-conscious at the time that the album was a big hit, so by the time I was self-aware musically, every song on Wet had been BEAT INTO THE GROUND, so much that I never wanted to hear it again. Especially Wanted: Dead or Alive.

I did enjoy Jon's solo soundtrack contribution to Young Guns II. Although not a 'Bon Jovi' record, it's my favorite thing with Jon Bon Jovi.

Honest to God, if someone was exiling me to an island forever, and told me I could take either "Slippery When Wet" or "Look What The Cat Dragged In", it'd be the Poison record.

It's just a matter of taste. I totally respect Bon Jovi's chops.

But I do not understand Jon & Richie's attitude about them being deserving of the same respect as Guns N' Roses and U2 of that era.

Bon Jovi simply got LUCKY. There were dozens and dozens of hair bands at the time, that could've caught the same breaks and got pushed in the same manner in an alternate dimension, and we wouldn't be talking Bon Jovi right now.

A Bon Jovi knockoff band from the 80's, which never found major success was a band called Hurricane. I'd take them over Bon Jovi, and their own schtick was basically the same. I just like their songs better.

Like I said, boils down to taste on the Bon Jovi thing.
