Re: REM break up.
I really think that when Bill Berry left that they lost their drive and their soul in their songwriting. The last album Michael sounded really old and tired.
Oddly I agree. I have always said the drummer doesn't really matter, but REM is a different beast. I think the band was the 4 of them.

Re: REM break up.
Was never a big fan, only really knew some of their hits. Feel sorry for any fans of theirs, as most of the bands I dig started up around 20-30 years ago as well
Re: REM break up.
It's another example of someone leaving a band and the band never being the same. I forgot they said they wouldn't continue without the 4 of them...in retrospect, that may have been the better option even though they did manage to have a few good songs after that.
Re: REM break up.
Bill asked them to go on as a band. From everything I've read, he was a the bright, positive light in the group that really pushed them to be a great rock & roll band. He was driven and very enthusiastic about making music. After his brain aneurysm he was never the same and didn't really have an interest in music anymore. He actually became a farmer.
Re: REM break up.
Fall of 1985 was my first year in college.....Athens, Ga. I came in to school a knuckle dragging Van Halen lovin' cock rocker. REM was everywhere...Life's Rich Pageant (1986) easily my favorite REM album.
Saw them at 40 Watt within a few weeks of stepping on campus. Incredible show...every song catchy as hell. Drank a bunch of beer and got a DUI when I was driving less than a half mile back to my Fraternity house. Damn....those were the days....:haha:
