Sad day.  Big part of my childhood.  I think they went downhill after Berry left.  And became a lot more pretentious. But this does make me sad.  Those albums from 86 to 95 were a big part of my life.

R.E.M. has split after 31 years together.

Frontman Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck and bassist Mike Mills announced the news on the band's website.

Their statement reads: "To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening."

Singer Stipe reveals the decision to break up was amicable but it was not easy.

He says, "A wise man once said - 'the skill in attending a party is knowing when it's time to leave.' We built something extraordinary together. We did this thing. And now we're going to walk away from it."

"I hope our fans realize this wasn't an easy decision; but all things must end, and we wanted to do it right, to do it our way."

"We have to thank all the people who helped us be R.E.M. for these 31 years; our deepest gratitude to those who allowed us to do this. It's been amazing."

The group was formed in 1980 with drummer Bill Berry, who quit in 1997, and they achieved critical and commercial success with hits such as The One I Love, Stand, Losing My Religion and Man on the Moon.

The group released 15 albums throughout their career and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.

R.E.M.'s final album, Collapse Into Now, was released in March.

They've sucked for years but had a killer run from the early 80s-mid 90s.

This song will forever kick ten tons of ass....

They have some great songs but sadly they are the WORST concert I ever saw. Saw them about 6 years ago. Absolutely terrible. A prime example of a band spinning their wheels going through the motions. Eddie Vedder talked about it tonight at the Pearl Jam show.  they no doubt influenced a lot of bands but sadly my lasting memory of them will be a shitty fucking concert

The video for that song was crazy.

I started out not liking REM...in fact, my friend and I wouild make fun of that stupid dance they do on the Pop Song 89 video.  They aren't the most talented band out there by a long shot, but they wrote some really catchy pop music and changed their sound several times over the years.  My attitude on them changed when I saw them in concert.  There was no running and jumping around the stage; they just played the music and played it well.  They also played their old songs with more distortion (similar to the tone on the Monster album) and they sounded like a rock band.

So there are two camps regarding concerts: some like the Axl Rose, Steven Tyler run around as much as you can mentality; others like people that don't do much, but play/sing their material well.  Obviously ideally I'd like to see someone do both, but few can pull it off (Steven Tyler in his prime was pretty damn good).  I'll take the band that plays their music well over anything else.  I went to hear good music, not to just see them run around.

I really think that when Bill Berry left that they lost their drive and their soul in their songwriting.  The last album Michael sounded really old and tired.
